      Re: polishes

You may want to look at the List O' Links first

The second link should answer your question though,
Are you wanting a cleaner polish like M83 or a pure polish like #07?

Yeah, I'm not sure anyone is going to go through and write out a description and how to use 20 or so different products.

What are you actually looking for and working on?

          Re: polishes

Don't confuse the word "polish" with "paint cleaning" as they are very different things. As Meguiar's uses the terms (and we've doing so longer than just about anyone) a polish is a product that does nothing more than enhance gloss - it contains no abrasives and provides no protection. Products like M07 Show Car Glaze and Deep Crystal Polish fit into this category. If you're trying to remove swirls, stains or etching these are NOT the products you want to select.

Defect removal is accomplished with either a paint cleaner such as ScratchX 2, a cleaner polish like SwirlX or M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish, or a compound such as Ultimate Compound or M105 Ultra Cut Compound. These are products that contain abrasives or abrasives plus polish, thereby giving you two steps in one bottle.

But selecting any one product is not simply a matter of matching them up to a certain level of paint defect severity. While M105 is often used to remove even mild swirl marks, it was designed to be used with a rotary buffer and a wool pad to remove wet sanding marks. It is very aggressive. Beyond that, we have what appears to be some crossover in products when you look merely at how effectively they cut. M80 Speed Glaze and M205 Ultra Finishing Polish are both rated a 4 on the cut scale but they accomplish the task in very different ways and can, depending on the paint, give very different results. There are definitely cases where one is the logical choice over the other.

None of this is meant to complicate things - quite the contrary. Not all paint systems are created equal, so a combination of pad, product, machine and speed that may yield outstanding results on one car may not do much of anything on another. Or that same combination may be far too aggressive on a third car. Paint systems can vary wildly from vehicle to vehicle so no one product is going to be a "universal wrench", as it were.
