  • On the brink of buying a DA...

I live in Canada so my options are slightly different than say if I lived in America (shipping mainly). Right now eshine has a decent deal going on: PC7424XP (*Edited due to link)
A PC 7424XP with pads for about $210 shipped. I'm pretty new to detailing and so I read I should stay away from rotary's. My question to you fellow MOL members is, should I go ahead and purchase the PC 7424 or wait and see if Meguiars announces a new DA at SEMA (in roughly 4 days)?

Obviously, a lot of you will recommend I wait and thats probably the smart thing to do. My only concern is that winter is soon approaching here in Toronto, and my new car has yet to be detailed (not even waxed). Factoring 2 weeks (minimum) shipping time, I probably wont have a DA at hand for another 2 weeks.

So 1. Am I right to assume a DA is best for a novice like me (vs. say a rotary). 2, would you agree that the PC 7424 deal I listed above is probably the safest (both in terms quality and price)?

Thanks again guys, looking forward to hearing what you guys think!

I'd wait, just to see what it is. Because if it is a new machine, it won't be for sale for at least another month, so factor that in. I say, just give it a good wax, clay it, and put a coat or two of wax on and call it good till spring, with of course washing in between and maybe some Ultimate Quik Wax in between.

Darn short time edit button. Make that wash, not wax. No sense to wax clay then wax

Yeah, I would not worry about "pre-winter" being your best detail ever. Think of spring as the 'fix-up' detail.

If you can wash, clay, cleaner/wax, and wax you will be good, and it wont be too painfull by hand. Hopefully you get a few decent days to wash and Ultimate Quick Wax, or even re-wax somewhere in the middle.

alrite so just do what I can for now by hand and then take a serious look come spring? Can't complain against that, saves me from breaking the bank.

So guess I'll just wash, clay, and wax for now? Question, how much clay does it detail an acura tsx? can the clay be reused, or after you finish one vehicle you pretty much throw it away?

            I would look at:

            1. Wash - Use a good quality soap, 2 buckets, good towels, sponges, etc.
            2. Clay - Can clay paint and glass. Might want to buy a second Quick Detailer bottle.
            3. ColorX or Cleaner/Wax
            4. Wax - Nxt 2.0
            5. Maintain - Ultimate Quick Wax after future washes.

As for the clay, one box should be more than enough. Just don't drop it on the ground, may want to work over newspaper, etc. I also like to break the clay bar in half, just in case I drop it. Don't re-use it if you drop it.

If your car is in good shape still, you might not even use up that 1/4 of clay. Just toss the clay in an zip-lok bag and give a spritz of QD in it.

If the clay is good, you can re-use it on the paint/glass later. If it seems a bit dirty, you can use it for wheels. And then exhaust tip/muffler is the last stop before the garbage.

Do the best you can for the winter. Then place your order and be ready for a spring detail.
Yes, the d/a is pretty much fool proof.

The old PC7424 was my first "real" buffer and it's a great little machine. You'll love it! Actually you'll love it more because of the new version (XP). If Meg's comes out with a new one next week it will likely be identical or better, so I think I'd wait. The rotary isn't likely to be a need for you anytime soon if you take care of your "new" car.

Sounds perfect, probably do that exactly. Thank you guys so much, been stressed lately on what I should do - especially with winter soon approaching.

You guys are awesome, can't stress it enough.
