    Not getting the results I want

    This is my first time using the M105/M205 combo with G110V2. I can not get the results I want. I first started by doing the entire hood with M205 w/ White LC pad to see if it would remove the defects. It did not. I then tried M105 w/ Orange LC pad on the left side on the hood. It's better but there is still a fair amount of swirling.

    I used M105 w/ Orange LC pad on the fender followed by M205 w/ White LC pad and was not happy. I repeated this procedure again. It looks good but not perfect. There are still fine scratches that are visible when the sun hits it. They are really hard to see in the photo b/c the sun went in. I'll try and get better shots when it comes back out.


    I am using the G110V2 on setting 1 to spread the polish and then moving to setting 5. I am going Up down, Up down, Up down, Up down, Up down on setting 5. I think I am over working the polish b/c the little amount that is left is tough to get off. I sprayed a little water to help remove it. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? Should I not expect to get these fine scratches out?

    How big of an area are you working and how many passes on the area are you doing (1 pass is when you cover the whole are that you are working on in one direction). I generally tend to work about a 12x12 area and depending on the way the paint is reacting will sometimes bump it up to a 16x16 area, doing about 5-6 passes, alternating directions every pass. You may not be using enough pressure either.

    I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.
    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

      I am doing roughly 18x18 maybe slightly larger. I am doing 3-4 passes and then the polish is all dried up. I think I should decrease my working area a little.

        What is a good indicator to tell if you are applying enough pressure or not. I do not want to destroy my pads.

          Place the polisher with pad on a bathroom scale. It weighs 5lbs, then practice the amount of force you need to exert to achieve 15 pounds. Keep in mind that you will have to press harder for vertical surfaces as gravity isn't working with you. You could practice this by placing the scale on vertical surface. Observe the way the pad looks and how your arm muscles feel while you are practicing.

            I would say to step down from M105 for a second and give UC a try. The UC may be leaving behind some micro-marring that you are mistaking for the original swirls. Soft paints will tend to swirl very easily and M105 is the most aggressive compound Meguiars produces.

            I do not understand why people go to M10 pull out 1200 grit sanding marks from fresh paint, not remove swirls from cured paint. Although it uses the new SMAT it can leave micro-marring which is why M205 is meant to follow up M105.

            Overall, try going down in aggressiveness and report back. Good luck!
