  • OPM speed settings for the DA polisher?

Does any know the OPM speed settings of these three DA polishers?
I'm really looking for the speeds 3800 and 4800 to use D300 and D301

Re: OPM speed settings for the DA polisher?

    Here's G110v2:

    • Speed Setting 1 - 1800 opm
    • Speed Setting 2 - 2800 opm
    • Speed Setting 3 - 3800 opm
    • Speed Setting 4 - 4800 opm
    • Speed Setting 5 - 5800 opm
    • Speed Setting 6 - 6800 opm

I don't have manuals for neither Porter Cable nor Griot's Garage tools. On their web pages only ranges are listed: 2,500 - 6,800 opm:

Car Care for the Perfectionist! Polishes, waxes, cleaners, polishers, foaming systems, detailing supplies, and accessories. We make it, we guarantee it!

Probably speed 4 for D300 and speed 3 for D301 would be still accurate.

Do the OPM's change for each of the settings for the first generation PC 7424? Thank you.

I got my answer from CSR at Griot's

1: 3,500 OPM, 2: 4,800 OPM, 3: 6,100 OPM 4: 7,400 5: 8,700 OPM 6: 10,000 OPM. These speeds are all approximate and depend on how much force is applied to the pad while the machine is orbiting.

Sounds like the very low settings are needed to stay within MF DA specs

                    Thanks Guys!

Got all the nfo (and more) than I expected. Right on!
Now I have no excuses not to make the job absolutely perfect.

I have found a similar but different combo I use...two dime size drops of D300 with two dime size drops of M105.
Great cut, much long working time and no drying or mess.

This post should be a sticky. I was going to use my 5" microfiber system for the first time today. I could not find RPM speed on my 7242.

                          (thread bump)
I've searched, but just can't seem to find a clear definition of "opm", as it relates to the rpm of the machine. What EXACTLY does "opm" mean? My DA, which is a very low end sander (400W, 5mm throw, with a backing plate a bit under 5") from a hardware store, has a no load RPM range of 4500 to 13000. The specs also give the no load "oscillation rate", which is 9000 - 26000, which is obviously exactly double the RPM. So, if we simplify it and assume that the pad is stalled (no free rotation), the whole pad is rotating around the forced-rotation axis at between 4500 to 13000 rpm, and if we consider each semi-circle of these rotations as an "oscillation", is that why it's exactly double?

As I recall, OPM means orbits per minute, like RPM means revolutions per minute. I think you're being generous calling your sander a DA; different machines for different uses. Here are some links that may be helpful in discussing speeds:

Thanks Joe. So, what is an "orbit"? Is that one revolution of the pad around the forced rotation spindle?
