  • Cleaning Polishing Pads

I just used my new D/A polisher on my car, but I'm wondering what is the best method to clean the pads? I have the Meguiar's yellow and black pads that need to be washed. I've seen some discrepancies online as to whether or not they should be placed in a washing machine, or hand washed.

Also, I dropped one of the pads on the ground of my garage. Is it safe to clean this and reuse, or do I need to throw it out so I don't chance swirling the cars in the future?

If they're 2.0 Soft Buff pads (7") they can be machine washes and dried.

If you accidentally drop your buffing pad you can wash it and re-use it.

I usually spray the pads liberally with APC or APC+ and let it sit for a minute or two. After this, I use my thumb to work in the cleaner and try to remove as much compound/polish/wax possible. Repeat as necessary until the pad is clean. Pads used for waxes and sealants might not come out perfectly clean and I usually do this procedure at least 2 times to them.

I dropped 1 finishing pad back in the day and I just soaked up the pad in a 5 gallon jug for a day and rubbed it against the grit guard periodically. It didn't swirl up the paint so I'm assuming it cleaned out the dirt well.

      Hope this helps!

meguiar's compounds are water based and can be cleaned with a garden hose, thier waxes have to be washed in a washing machine sepratly from any other items then after the washing is complete run another cycle so the wax will be removed from the machine drum, before clothes can be washed.

          Re: Cleaning Polishing Pads

I have used a couple of different methods of cleaning my pads that mirror the other posts on this thread. When I do a complete car and use multiple pads I set a bucket up with APC+ and toss the pads in as I go along. This makes it easier to clean them later in the kitchen sink with Dawn or toss them in the washing machine if the wife isn't around . LOL. I hate to admit it but I have used some pads in the past and went off and forgot to clean them until a week or so later. Adding a little vinegar to the dawn in the sink saved the day and the pads. These pads are pretty forgiving and after you try a few different methods you will find a favorite that fits your needs.
