  • Question

So, I'm not TOO informed on rotary's, however, I do know the differences between a rotary and a PC, and the types of effects they can both create.

Is a Makita 9227C a rotary? A friend is selling one, and I may pick it up from him.

Is 90$ for it a good deal?

    Re: Question

Yes, the 9227C is the latest Makita rotary. Many of us (including me) have it and really like it.

Depending on the condition, $90 is a really good deal. Also, does it come with the accessories - bag, handles, etc?

I bought a 9227C back in July and paid $120 for it, but it had a lot of scratches and stuff. I then bought an almost new 9227CX3 for $140. Even though the first one had been extensively used, it ran just as good as my new one. There was no decrease in performance.

      Re: Question

Street price on a brand new one from a tool discounter is usually a little under $200.

        Re: Question

This thing is in MINT condition guys. No bag, but that's ok with me. I believe it has a handle, he's including a backing plate with it as well.

        I offered 80$, he said he'll do 90$.

Looks like im getting it for 90$!!!

          Re: Question

If it's mint condition, and he's selling for $90 I would definately take it.

            Re: Question

I'm getting it =) I'm excited, yet nervous.

Can the pads I use with my PC be used with my rotary?

              Re: Question

Yes, the same pads used with a PC can be used with the rotary.

I'd get a new backing plate. The one that comes standard is too large.

Yeah, you were right, the backing plate is too big. Which do you guys use for the 6.5" pads?

Meguiars has these backing plates avaliable depending on pad size. For the 6.5" pads they recommend the W64 and for 8" pads the W65. However, using the W65 works just fine for most people even with the 6.5" pads because the backing plate offers more pad coverage and support for the pad when working in tight areas. In other words, there is more overlap of the backing plate when using a smaller pad, thus there is less "give" or less "play" and a greater feel for what you are buffing.

By that you mean that the pad doesn't bend at the edges, correct? I saw that combo being used on here and was wondering if I should give it a try.

An 8" Backing plate with a 6.5" pad. The pad won't be too small though, will it?

                        Re: Question

Yes, the pad won't bend/flex nearly as much at the edges. The reason I say this is because there is about 2-3 millimeters of pad extending from the edge of the backing plate all the way around, so the backing plate does not support the pad 100%.

No, the pad will not be too small so long as you center it properly. Remember, you have a little play (even if it is only millimeters) as stated above. Like you've witnessed, many have used this combination and a good number of detailers prefer this combination for certain tasks.

I don't have a camera on me now, but I will try to get some pics of this combination up sometime soon in the event that you can't find some on MOL.
