  • Solo System

I am extremely fascinated and interested in the Solo system, but I notice on this forum few people talk about it or seem to use it.

Does anyone use it and can they provide suggestions or comments?

Curious to see how easy it is to achieve a hologram and swirl free finish in general. Or compared to say, for example, using M205 with a W9207, or using a DA.

I have the Solo system. You get M86 polish with it. M86 is the first of the SMAT polishes (M205/M105). It works very well. My favorite part are the wool pads (yellow & purple). I use them with my rotary buffer for heavy defect removal and they work quite well. The backing plate that is supplied is supposed to diminish the ability to instill swirls. So far I have found that to be true.

      Re: Solo System

I love Solo Cut and Polish cream, AKA M86. It's a fantastic product for moderate defect removal via rotary, and yes, in many cases it will finish swirl and hologram free.

I buffed a 10-year old plane with M86 and a yellow polishing pad to a flawless finish on rock hard single stage white paint. It was an amazing finish in direct sunlight... zero holograms.

It's relatively cheap, too, considering what it accomplishes. If you use a rotary buffer, M86 is a must have product IMO.

I believe it was intended for fresh paint originally, but as mentioned above, many get good results on cured paints as well.

Is there any reason the Solo system wouldn't be the only product you'd need with a rotary?

As Murr mentioned, it is formulated for fresh paint, and as such it might not work as intended on cured paint.

Whether by coincidence or not, I am not sure, but I find it to work particularly well on single stage paint.

For a cured paint job or clear coated cars, M86 would act more like a medium polish in my personal opinion, rather than the heavy-hitting compound it can be on fresh paint.

              Re: Solo System

I see, I didn't realize it was only for fresh paint. I did not come across anything that mentioned that when I was looking.

I guess I sort of thought it was an end-all solution to polishing and deciding what polish to use...

Well, not "only", but original intent.

                  Re: Solo System

I have used the Solo stuff on many paints that were not new and it works great. But there are many different paints. There is not just one solution. That is why there are many products. Think of these different products as tools in your tool kit. The right tool for the right job.....that's why you do a test spot to see what works. The Solo system with M86 and the Solo pads are some great tools.
