  • New to Rotary and Detailng

    Hi,

I just purchased a new Dewalt DWP849X polisher. This was a recommendation from a good friend. I plan on using it on my boat, 2005 Ford F150 Lariat, 2004 Corolla and maybe later on my wife’s 2014 Lexus RX350. I found links and information on compounding and polishing using the rotary however I could not find anything on waxing. I did find links for waxing using a DA polisher. Can anyone provide me any experiences using a rotary to wax before I run out and purchase a DA?

    Thxs,

    Fred

Hi Fred, Welcome to Meguiar's Online. Many members of our discussion forum, including myself, will likely steer you towards a D/A Polisher, even for all steps. It is very easy to leave behind rotary swirls with a rotary machine, especially in automotive paint, among other cons. The machine action is also much more aggressive in general compared to a random orbital d/a. A random orbital d/a like our MT300 is more like the action of a sander. A rotary, is basically a grinder with a foam pad on it, to put the two in general comparison. Below is an article for reference which dives into the differences in the actions.

Beginners guide to the different types of paint polishing tools

The only time I personally use a rotary is for using compound on a fiberglass/gel coat, boats or rvs, very tight areas where i do not prefer a random orbit on automotive paint, headlights, and when working on fresh paint. Other than that, it's a random orbital D/As.

    Hope this helps.
