  • Wet sanding vs dry with da & interface pad

I have spent years wet sanding and always with megs paper and blocks but now a days i find myself reaching for the da and 3m's 1500 dry hookit paper, less mess and i love the results.

Has anyone else tried it dry ?

Yeah. I've also been wondering why some of the shops I've seen been doing it dry via Mirka (or similar appratus) .

If I'm not mistaken, the slides in NXTti class mentioned that dry is less aggresive compared to wet (same grit) and less mess.

Havent tried dry sanding, always on wet...maybe one of these days I'll try it dry.

Other forumers are welcomed to chime in.

Maybe some of us are waiting for more info so we can try it.

I guarantee you; once you try dry sanding with a DA you’ll never want to go back to hand wetsanding.

I was trained on the Mirka system and haven’t tried 3M’s dry disks. But I would assume they behave similarly.

First off, DA sanding, wet or dry, is soooo much easier and gives sooooooo much more uniform results you’ll get the job done way faster and with a better finish than by hand. There are always areas that must be done by hand so hand wetsanding will still be part of any project. But the more you can do by DA the happier you’ll be with the work and the results.

Sanding dry allows you to inspect your work continuously, without constantly having to stop and wipe off the sanding slurry and wait for it to dry to look at it (you still need to stop and clean the disks regularly to avoid pigtail scratches). It’s much easier to stay on top of what you’re doing.

Wet sanding with very fine disks still gives the best finish. So, if you want the absolutely best results you’ll want to do your heavy cutting dry and follow up with wet finishing disks (like Mirka Abralon or 3M Trizact) before buffing.

I use 3M system 1500 dry, then jump to the Mirka system for my final wet sanding.

              Was off yesterday...

One thing about dry sanding is you'll want to wear a dust mask or you'll breath in the powdered residue as you sand. Your sanding disks will load up with removed paint particles too where with wet-sanding they will tend to flush off.

It's more personal preference than anything else, I prefer to machine wet-sand with the Mirka system because the sanding disk are pre-attached to a foam backing which give it some cushion plus you can use them alone to hand sand curves, again with a built-in cushion/backing pad.

Mirka also goes to #4000 and I believe the 3M Trizact only goes to #3000

Re: Wet sanding vs dry with da & interface pad

I had an impression people are doing wet sanding instead of dry sanding for a reason that has not been mentioned while all these pros of dry sanding are being pushed to front:

With dry sanding it is very easy, much easier than with wet sanding, to get particles of sanded paint in between pad and paint and damage paint, and that that outweighs all the dry sanding benefits.

                  Is my understanding incorrect?

when dry sanding to remove dirt nibs you have to listen for what i call zingers which is a distinct sound when a dirt nib is knocked loose and gets between the paper and the paint.when dry sanding for peel removal small areas with frequent wiping of surface and paper.

With the 3m system i start dry d/a 5" with a 3/16 orbit with 1200 or 1500 depending on film thickness than finish up with the trizact 3000 wet.
