  • Scratch Removal in the Sun?

    Hey guys,

I'm just starting to get into the whole detailing scene this week, and have been doing all of my research and shopping. My first detail of the spring is going to consist of a wash, clay, wash again, swirl removal, polish, and wax.

I've purchased the following products for the job (all Meguiars products):
Wash: Gold Class Shampoo, Water Magnet Towel, Supreme Shine Towels, Microfiber Wash Mitt, 2 Buckets
    Clay: Smooth Surface Clay Kit
Scratch Removal: Scratchx, Foam Applicator Pads
Polish: Deep Crystal Polish, Foam Applicator Pads
Wax: Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax, Foam Applicator Pads
I've also picked up the Hot Wheels All Wheel cleaner for the wheels and the Hot Shine tire gloss for the tires.

My main question is: is it safe to do scratch and swirl removal in the sun?
My problem is that my garage is rather dimly lit and I don't have any other portable forms of lighting that will reveal the swirls. I've looked into those spotlamps that detailers use, but they're just too much money for me.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Buy some halogen lights - not very expensive and will do the job.

What Dave said above. Lowes/Home Depot or probably ANY DIY store will have them. Figure on $20 and up.

DON'T work in the sun. It just makes the surface much to warm, hence the product just dries out way too fast. But do use the sun to check your work afterwards.

I've done a car in a dimly lit garage before using something like the Brinkman light to feel my way through each section. Not a perfect way, but better than being in the direct sun.

          Thanks for the replies, guys!

          Would something like this suffice?

If I am reading your location as Maine/Rhode Island, if you start detailing right away, the sun may still be cool enugh to work in.
