How to safely remove a dried bird dropping

If you have a completely dried bird dropping on your car's finish, and you DON'T have access to a water hose with free flowing water, then instead of wiping it off with a spray detailer or worse, scrubbing it off, do this instead,
    • Take a clean microfiber polishing cloth, fold it four ways to create a thick, plush wiping cloth.
    • Next, spray one side with your favorite spray detailer, the idea is to hyper-lubricate the entire face of one side.
    • Next place it onto the dried bird dropping.
    • Wet the cloth with water until the entire cloth is saturated but not to the point where water is running down the hood. The idea is to have plenty of water present to soak into the dried bird dropping.
    • Let the wet cloth stand on the dried bird dropping for 5-10 minutes.
    • Now, carefully enclose the wet-microfiber around the bird dropping using your hand and fingers , you're trying to carefully bunch-up the microfiber and then LIFT the bird dropping off the paint. Don't simply wipe the bird dropping over the paint.

Simulated bird dropping that has landed on the middle of the hood. In the real world, bird droppings contain Uric Acid and if not removed in a very short period of time they can actually eat through a coating of wax or paint sealant and etch or eat into the paint.

Simulated bird dropping using Meguiar's M205 with a little Finishing Glaze mixed on top for visual effect. Note, because the focus of this how-to article is on technique, we did not let the polishes dry as that's not a good practice but we think you'll get the idea.

Mist on a wet or heavy application of your favorite spray detailer detailer to hyper-lubricate one folded side.

Gently place the wet side of the microfiber onto the bird dropping.

Now add water to saturate your microfiber but don't add so much that you have water running off the hood. Allow 5-10 minutes to pass so the water can soak into the dried bird dropping in an effort to re-liquefy to make it soft so as to reduce the potential of instilling any swirls and scratches from dried bird dropping being rubbed against the paint.

Now carefully use your hand to scrunch or bunch up the microfiber around the now liquefied bird dropping and then lift the bird dropping up and off the paint. Don't simply wipe the bird dropping over the paint.

Give the area a final wipe using a new, clean fresh microfiber polishing towel using your favorite spray detailer.

    Bird Dropping Etchings
If you notice any etching in the paint left by the bird dropping you'll need to use a compound, paint cleaner or swirl mark remover by hand or machine to carefully remove the etching and then afterwards polish the paint to a high gloss and re-apply your favorite wax or paint sealant.

      Great write up Mike!

Another reason why you should lift the bird dropping off of the paint rather than wiping, is because of how birds digest food. If you've ever had a pet bird you know that you need to add gravel to their food seed. Birds require gravel and/or even small stones to help them grind up and digest food, primarily seeds that are swallowed whole and need to be literally ground down in the gizzard. Inevitably, some of this gravel, sand or other abrasive particulate matter is going to be passed through their system and end up in that dropping on the hood of your car. Simply wiping the dropping off the paint can potentially lead to a grinding of this particulate against the paint, which is obviously not a good thing.

And you thought this was just a detailing forum!!!

Guess in addition to the 3-4MFs and bottle of QD I keep in the trunk, I'll have to add a small bottle of water

          Good to know! Thanks Mike.

I have been using a method similar to what you describe. I keep a bottle of Last Touch in my trunk along with 2-3 clean microfibers. I saturate the bird dropping with LT and gently blot it up with the microfiber. I usually need several applications to completely remove it.

            Interesting factoid...

Dang... I post to 5 other forums, now I need to go update them all and add this since it helps drive the importance of lifting off versus wiping off...

I'll be sure to give you credit Mike, due credit where credit is due...

Thanks for the extra insight... (I've never owned a bird)

              Thanks for the writeup Mike.

I have had pretty good results using Last Touch for this type of situation. I like to think that the extra slickness and lubricity in Last Touch helps avoid any possible marring.

Great tip! Hey Mike, Will you be doing a write-up on that Mustang? The paint on that thing looks wicked.

Interesting technique. Thanks for the share Mike.

Good timing of the post as the parking lot at one of my customers place is just beneath a bunch of trees with hordes of nasty birds doing its best to destroy the cars beneath.

Re: How to safely remove a dried bird dropping

And most important of all when dealing with bird droppings:

                    WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES.

A few years ago, I had a friend's dad that touched the door handle that had some speck of bird droppings on it while entering his truck. While driving, he, like most of us, was rubbing his eye constantly with his bare hands. (Handy sanitizers and wipes weren't even born yet)

Within a few days his eye was swollen immensly. A few more days later the infection spread into his blood stream where he caught some rare disorder that impacts his speech to this day.

Thought it would be wise to spread the word, because if you think about it, how many times a day do you rub your eyes and not even realize it?

amazing tutorial man thanks for posting. To be honest my car has been a victim of these bird droppings so many times I seriously needed this.

Re: How to safely remove a dried bird dropping

The parking spaces outside my apartment are all underneath trees and my car is constantly being bombarded by whatever the trees drop on it and the birds seem to downright hate my ride.

I seriously don't want to put MFTs with bird droppings in the washing machine so I was wondering if baby wipes might do the job? I am very new to properly taking care of cars and thus I didn't know you shouldn't put too much pressure on your finish so I just used pressure washers to get that stuff off before.

Stick with the microfiber towels for this, but if you really don't want them in the washing machine just give them a good hand washing in a bucket of soapy water first.

Sorry guys restarting the thread again. Can SwirX be used for bird dropping etching? I mean, if etching can be removed by 3-4 applications of ScratchX, using SwirlX 6-7 times can remove it right? Another procedure I thought of is claying, SwirlX and DC polish. Is this okay? The reason being I do not have ScratchX.
