  • 1988 m5

    Hi:
I have a 1988 BMW M5 with very good original paint. There's swirl marks (probably caused by me) and a nice scratch where I rubbed up against a bush.
Feel free to comment, if you can, on what a good progression of products to go with. Many recommended various systems, but I think I'd like to keep it all by hand.
    Thanks A LOT.

Well, just have to keep it simple at first...

    1. Wash
    2. Clay
    3. Clean - SwirlX or Ult. Polish for mild cleaning. Ult. Compound for stronger cleaning, swirl removal, etc. Cant say working by hand will be easy to remove everything, but can try. Just do small areas at a time, over a few days.
    4. Polish - Optional, but if single stage paint, you may want to use a pure polish like Deep Crystal Polish, or at least Ult. Polish after the Ult. Compound.
    5. Wax - your favorite wax
    6. Wax - 2 thin coats are best.

+1 on what Murr said. Doing it by hand will take quite a bit of effort to get it corrected though.

      Sounds like a nice M5. I love the E28 M5

        Re: 1988 m5

Thanks a lot. Looks like I'll do the following:
        - wash
        - clay bar
        - Ultimate Compound in one or two spots (with a foam applicator)
        - Ultimate Polish everywhere
        - Hi Tech Yellow Wax #26
And it's a 100% squared away E28 M5 to utter mechanical perfection. The previous owners were as fanatical about maintenance as I and the one I bought it from redid the entire interior. The final step, aside from the above of course, will be a new set of tires; likely Continental Extreme Contact DW's.
        Thanks again.

Nothing wrong with UC everywhere if it needs it... just see how it goes.

One change is to finish with Gold Class Carnuba Plus Paste Wax and here's a link:
