  • Hello from AL!

He everyone, I'm no pro detailer but am restoring my first vehicle. It's been torn down, painted, and partially reassembled. Now it's time to decide what can be done to make the paint pop. I'll be asking 101-level questions for sure.

If you haven't already, please read Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle. That should help you get started.

That's the sort of care I will be implementing after initial setup. My starting point s orange peel on paint, and a fiberglass / gelcoat shell that has received no attention.

Been searching around the site for the last couple weeks, wishing there was more information specific to single-stage paint with orange peel.

Working on single stage versus base coat/clear coat paint is really basically the same thing - for the most part you can use the same products and processes on both. Single stage paints, particularly older single stage lacquers, tend to be much softer than modern clear coats so you can usually get away with a less aggressive product on the SS to remove defects similar to those found on clear coats. Single stage paints also respond much better to products like M80 Speed Glaze that have a lot of polishing oils in them as you're dealing with the pigmented paint directly rather than the clear paint on top.

When it comes to dealing with orange peel in fresh paint, it makes no difference whether it's SS or BC/CC; orange peel is texture in the paint that is only going to be reduced or eliminated through wet sanding and rotary compounding to remove the subsequent sanding marks. If we're talking fresh paint, then again the liquids and pads selected to do this are interchangeable with SS or BC/CC paints.

By the way, what's the project you're working on here? Got any pictures to share with the community?
