  • Ultra Plush Wash Mop Review

My review of the Ultra Plush Wash Mop.

    Packaging & Labeling:

The packaging and labeling was fine.

    Usage Tips/Directions:

There were VERY good washing directions/tips on the package.

    Performance:

Well, I REALLY, REALLY didn’t want to do this review, as some truly fine detailers here have given this product a two thumbs up, and I'm not sure I completely agree. So, rather than do a regular review on this product, I will do a comparison review with a similar product from a competitor. Hopefully, this will point out some things that I think can be improved to make the Wash Mop a truly great tool.

Anyhow, here’s how they differ when it comes to performance:

The competitor’s telescopic wash glove is a pretty decent lambs wool glove/mop and much softer than the synthetic Wash Mop. In my “mind (not necessarily fact), that makes it safer. I also think it will be safer over a longer period of time, as I find that the synthetic mitts tend to matt up and become “wiry over a short period of time. I also find that lambs wool and high quality cotton mitts rinse out and release dirt particles and other “nasties much better than synthetic fibers. Checking the Wash Mop closely after usage showed this particular issue to be true.

The competitor’s wash glove is considerably larger than the Wash Mop. While the wash mop holds quite a bit of water and suds, the competitor’s wash glove seems to hold even more… another good thing. The thinner, larger backing plate and larger wash mitt on the competitors wash glove felt far more efficient than the Wash Glove. The competitor’s glove felt like it was gliding over the paint surface with less resistance than the Wash Mop. This is probably due to a combination of all the above factors.

Now, the above does not mean that the Wash Mop is necessarily a bad tool in my opinion. It is indeed a very handy tool. Especially for getting the roof’s and windows of large/high vehicles clean. However, I think it could be a much better and handier product with a larger, safer, wash mop/glove. To be fair, there a couple things I would like to see improved on the competitor’s product too. This is where the value of dealing with true car care enthusiasts like the folks at Meguiar’s is really beneficial… as they will listen. I doubt I can even find out who makes the other one?

    Value:

Decent value given the price. I would be willing to pay considerably more for an even better version.

    Conclusions:

A larger, thinner backing plate with a larger high quality lambs wool/sheepskin wash mop to match the larger backing plate would really make this one a winner.

Hopefully, this review doesn't offend anyone, but simply points out some differences of opinions.

Nice write up... I agree with the mop head even with that I still think its a winning combo... Its nice to see what others think and get different points of view.

I also would like to know the other wash mop.

Here is a thought... not sure it would work or be cost efficient. Expand on the Meguiars interchangeable "heads". Once you have the extendable handle (wash mop handle); additional mop "heads" could be sold maybe a size or two larger and different types of mop covers make a "system" out of it.

Thanks for the objective review pointing out both the pros and cons.

The mop seems to glide over the surface better than my Viking mop which is 100% cotton. I have had no marring issues yet and so far I am very happy with it.

I too did wonder how easily this mop will shed dirt when rinsing etc. so I will keep an eye on it. I assume this is a synthetic mop but it seems like lambs wool when it is dry. Lamb's wool mits seem like they would scratch the paint to me yet they usually get good reviews.

So if anyone is concerned about the mop marring the paint as it wears down they should probably replace it on a regular basis say every 10 to 20 washes or so.

It would be interesting to get opinions from other on how often they replace their wash mops. And maybe Mike or Tim could chime in and say how many washes they would use the mop for before they replace it.

Same here... I like to use tons of water/saop to wash my truck (no matter the mitt/mop type) to get as much lubrication, 3-4 gallons of a soapy GC/water combo.

            RamAirV1,

I recently picked up a Meguiar's Lamb's wool wash mitt.... now I'm spoiled!

After using that Lamb's wool mitt, the other washing products are going to come in a "close second"... with some coming in a "closer second" than others!

              Hey Boss,

Great review! You make some very interesting points. I too am leery about using synthetic mitts etc based on past experience. However, I have not had any issues thus far with the Meguiar's Wash Mop. Perhaps in time, the mop head's fibers will become more stiff etc. So while I have not tried any other brand of wash mop, I am very pleased with the Meguiar's Wash Mop thus far.

So far I have used the wash mop 3 times on my black Suburban and 4 times on my wife's burgundy Sebring. The only problems I have found with the wash mop are; mop head should be a least half size larger and the plate that holds the mop head should be a flexible type material. If the mop head was flexible it would be able to clean the surfaces that aren't flat.
