  • Is it ok that I go M105 then to wax?

Last year when I bought my first DA, a G110 it took me a while to learn I could actually remove swirls.

My Mercedes hard paint didn't want to clean up. I tried UC and some of the older style products like M80.

Finally I tried M105. I was then able to remove swirls, and I worked on removing new swirls again this winter.

Today I did the roof, trunk, and rear panels. In the sun, almost all the swirls did indeed once again come out. THis is very satisfying on a black car, to see it look flawless again.

I do own M205, but the way M105 seems to be the very bottom end of being able to make action on my car's paint, I don't follow it with anything anymore. I take my time and do more passes with M105 rather than set aside time to follow with M205.

Is this a really bad idea or on some paints is going M105 to your wax ok as it seems to be for me?

There is nothing wrong with #105 then wax.

As the paint gets older, you may like to add in a pure polish once in a while. Clearcoats arent as resposive to polishes, but as they get older, they open up a bit more.

As long as it doesn't look like you need to follow it up with something less aggressive, then you are good to go with your LSP.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
      Remove swirls my friends.

Occasionally, 105 can finish to lsp ready. So if that is your case. Go ahead and apply your wax.

What product you choose, and how you apply it, has no bearing on whether you should go straight to wax or use something else between it and the wax. Only the condition of the paint will dictate that, so if it looks wax ready to you after just M105, then it's wax ready.

But there is something you might want to try, even with your hard paint. Just because M205 doesn't have the cut needed to remove swirls, that doesn't mean it won't do anything for you. M205 can do a fantastic job of really clarifying a finish, meaning it can add visual clarity and sharpness to a finish. Try using it with a finishing pad at speed 4, working maybe a bit larger area than you did with the M105 (hold to 3' x 3' max, though) and use only moderate pressure. Work each area for a good long time - M205 offers a crazy long buffing cycle - and see if that process gains you some gloss and clarity.

I've looked at cars that appeared to be perfect after #105 only to find slight ghosting or buffer like trails when at a different angle in full sun. I'm ALWAYS glad I decided to use #205 after it's all said and done, it leaves such a deep dark finish.

I have in storage 3 or 4 other products that I used to use. Then I went to one of Maguiars classes. M105 & M205 were brand new and they talked about them. I bought it and I carry the other products but every job that I need a product for the job I take M105 & M205. 99% of the time using both makes a difference for whoever you are doing the job for to see the car and be satisfied or say WOW.

As others have said, you could if you wanted to; but I can definitely tell a difference between 105>wax and 105>205>wax; especially on a black car (note that I have limited experience). Are you curious about skipping the 205 due to cost or time or both or other? If you've 105'd the entire car; maybe d151 would be good in this case for the future?

105 is a great polish that has the potential to finish up great.

Just inspect your work and see if you need to make any changes. Sometimes you'll only need to spot-correct with a finishing polish.
