Awesome job, and the photos are great but I have some simple/dumb questions.
I understand the need for sanding but as that reduces the amount of paint covering the sheet metal
1) does that make the car become more susceptible to chipping, and
2) is the overall life of the paint reduce as well as the thickness or are additional costs of protection required to compensate?
To sand & buff doesn't automatically mean it will be more susceptible to chipping, and you are correct in the fact that if too much material is removed, then you do have to consider UV protection in the clear. However, this car is a show-car, so it will not be exposed to the normal wear and tear of a daily driver and it also does not have factory paint on it. With all these being considered. there were no issues of sanding on it
If this was factory clear, we may not have even sanded, but if we decided to, we would have used 3000 or finer grit paper to minimize the clear being removed.

Wow that Avalon looks just absolute fabulous, what a great shine, one question do
" How fresh was the paint on that beautiful show car "?
Hi detailmaniac,
It is my understanding this car was painted for SEMA...it is still fairly fresh, but after doing some different testing, So1o was the answer. That is why we choose it

hey mike,
i was curious, wouldn't a finishing pad normally be used instead of a polishing pad to apply the lsp (or was this pic just for demonstration purposes)? looks good, great job!
Sorry....I missed this question earlier
Not just for demonstration, we did actually use the W8006 Foam Polishing Pad to apply NXT Generation Tech Wax. Either the W9006 Foam Finishing Pad or the W8006 Foam Polishing Pad could have been used, we just happen to grab this one

Mike what do you think, is So1o appropriate for extremely soft cured factory finishes such as BMW Jet Black (E90) or Euro Honda Nighthawk Black? They are typically so soft that even a plush MF can mar them.
It is my understanding this car was painted for SEMA...it is still fairly fresh, but after doing some different testing, So1o was the answer. That is why we choose it
It is really tough to say what cars So1o is for and what cars it is not for outside of body shops. All of the testing and R & D was done on "fresh" paint as we all know
What this means is, there are people and times when So1o may work on "cured" / "factory" paint, but we have seen many times when it does not perform well at all in that situation.
With that said, that is why we can't really say use it here, or use it there regarding "cured" / "factory" paints. if you wish to try it, and have good success, great
