  • Hey Mike Phillips-my Saturday detail

    Hey Mike,

Here's some pix of my saturday detail on my daughter-in-laws truck. It's a late 90's with 156,000 miles, been outside except for the last year and has never had a coat of wax. This was my practice vehicle for learning to use the Makita rotary. It was a lot of work.

Final picture - just cause I love my corvette

Meguiars products did an awesome job.

    Trim detailer (awesome stuff)
    Heavyduty vinyl cleaner
    Final Inspection

Thanks for your tips Mike. I still need lots of pratice with the Makita.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

With the Makita I used #3 speed. I did not want to go too fast and take a chance at burning the paint. I did not have any accidents with the Makita, although it is a little awkward when doing the sides of the truck.

            Hi Bob,

Great Job! Your results look outstanding, good before and after pictures too!

Besides skill and technique, using the rotary buffer to restore a car's finish requires quite a bit of upper body strength, how did you feel the next day?

Was this your first complete detail using the rotary? I think you told me during the Mercedes-Benz Extreme Makeover, but I forgot...

If it is, way to go! I tend to recommend learning how to use a rotary buffer on just about anything but a black car or truck.

            Mike

            p.s.

I edited your first post to make the photo's show up. What you did was copy and past the URL address of the page the photo was on. What you need to do is click on the photo, (when it's a thumbnail), this will bring up a full size photo, then [b]right click on the photo and copy and paste the URL Address for the photo. Once you do it one time, it will make sense. -MP

I was a little daring ,tried a black hood and trunk.( not mine) Hood worked out well! Had to use PC after rotary for the trunk. Practiced quite a bit on scrap first though.

2000- Thanks for the positive feedback. I used an 8 inch cutting pad on the hood and roof and a 6 inch polishing pad on the sides (all Meguiars pads). Then a 6 inch polishing pad with the PC.

                Mike-
Yes, this is my first rotary use. I was a bit sore afterwards, back was sore from working on the roof. I go to the gym regularly and lift weights as well as do arobics, so by the next day I felt fine. It was tough to get the buffer to always be smooth. Perhaps I was using too much product. I noticed in the meguiars video there is very little product on the car as he buffs.

I too was a bit concerned about starting on a black car....but it was in pretty bad shape so there was little to loose. I figured that if I could do a black car swirl free, then I should be able to tackle most anything else. It was a real learning experience.

I still need to master not throwing product all over the place. I guess that will come with more practice

                Thanks for fixing my pix!
