  • Black Yukon Revisited

I received a call from a client on a black Yukon I had detailed a few months back.

The truck was pretty dirty so I started out by foaming the surface to help loosen up the dirt. I wanted to make sure I wasn't creating any more work by instilling my scratches on the paint.

Now that the surface is clean I can proceed with inspecting the paint. Light scratches / swirls were visible.

I found hazed spots in some areas.

I did my test spot using the PC and didn't like the results so I moved on to my rotory with 8006 & some #80. This was the first pass. Some light rotory trails are still visible at this point.

Here is a full panel with the xenon lamp in the backfround. Still looked a little milky and cloudy.

This is the end result. Some areas required #83 on a 8006 pad followed by #80 on the rotory. #9 then became my best friend also applied with the rotory. #21 was hand applied.

I tried to get the best sun reflection the day could provide. It was a cloudy misty day which made it kind of frustrating at certain points in the day to apply the polish.

To make sure I had no holograms or any rotory buffer trails I used my xenon light continuously

After 9 hours and 55 minutes I can now call it a day.

You can see my PC down below. For some reason I kept getting micro marring no matter what I tried. The Rotory from beginning to end seemed to give me the results I was looking for.

Hyper dressing was used on the tires and the side steps as well as the wheel wells and engine bay.

This was a email today sent to Shinetech. 3/3/08

          Hello Jesse,

I wanted to thank you for your excellent work on my customers 2003 Yukon, being that black is a very difficult color to maintain I know being a car painter it is one of the hardest colors to detail if you don't know your products and tools of the trade. With my 29 years experience in the autobody and paint field I know when I don't want to handle certain detail jobs so thanks to you, from now on every detail that I can sell I know who to call

          Thank you!

Your correct. I did use #66. The paint wasn't as bad since I had polished it out a couple of months prior. I have a black G35 I just did major work on in which I will post about tomorrow.
