As a belated Mothers Day present and a thank you for helping with my daughters room, I shined up my mother-in-law's 1999 Subaru Forester.
Now for those you saw my write up on my wifes black Focus, it was that bad and a whole lot worse!!
The car is sorta like candy apple red metallic and grey on the bottom, I'm not too sure on how often it's washed (not often I assume) or waxed but I know for one thing it was in REAL BAD SHAPE and I almost stuck this in the extreme makeover section.
There are soo many dents and dings as well as deep scratches and swirls out the ying yang that at first I thought that I was way over my head for trying to detail this. It was so bad that my wife wanted me to get a random orbital.....I told her that it wouldn't touch what's on the paint and that I needed a DA. Well after trying to explain the differences of an RO and a DA and going to several different stores to see if maybe.....just maybe they would have one only to come out empty handed. I think I see a G110 in the near future!
Day 1 I started out at about 11:30 in the morning. Hitting up the car wash I focused most of my attention there on the rims that are in horrible shape! Gunk, brake, dust and other road induced nasties were scrubbed with Hot Shine All Wheel Cleaner. It got alot of the junk off but after 10 years of neglect there were still **** I couldn't budge. Being a nice Saturday the place was packed so I took off to the house and parked her in the back under a nice shady tree.
I clayed the hood, front end, and side panels as the hood was what was worrying me the most. So many deep scratches, how they got there is beyond me! I did a test panel going thru the whole process....UC x3, M07x2, and NXT 2.0 x2.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
The paint is pretty soft, most of the scratches were knocked out and the ones that stuck around were diminished to the point that you could only see them at odd angles,You can actually see the flake in the paint!! I had to wait out the sun as it took over the hood, so I started on the interior.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!
The inside probably hasn't been cleaned out in about 5 years, dirt caked everywhere! I told her to take EVERYTHING out before I took the car and still filled up 3 bags!
After everything was out I went to town on all the plastic pieces I first wiped everything down using multi purpose orange wipes and Simple Green for the dirt that wouldn't come up....I love that stuff! I did a quick wipe down of all the windows. After everything was clean, I whipped out the Supreme Shine and now her interior looks brand new!.....well the carpets and upholstry is still bad as I have no good means to clean them yet.
After about 3 hours working on the inside, the sun finally let the shade back so I finished up the hood and knocked out the front end, finishing up with putting GC Trim Detailer on the grill and fog light pieces.
At this time the sun went down and I had no good light left, I took the car back to the carwash to be vacummed out...looking real nice!
After the car wash, I decided to call it a day. I drove the Forrester back to my mom-in-laws restaurant so she could take it home for the night.
The expression on her face when she saw the interior was PRICELESS!!!! It gave me the warm and fuzzies and definately made the day worth while. All her co workers were in shocked too, one even said to me "If I pay you, will you do mine too?"
Started at 11:30 stopped at around 8:30...9 hours and only the hood, front end and interior done.
Day 2. Got to the house at 8:45 and began at 9. She had to be at a party at 4 and with the sun slowing me down I was only able to UC the whole car....excluding the roof. I was able to finish up the right side panel, but nothing more. The body was pretty much in the same shape as the roof before I got to it. Clay plus UC x3 and you wouldn't be able to recognize the car anymore! I also dressed up the side mirrors, trim, and handles with the GC Trim Detailer. The car looks amazing in my opinon. What do y'all think?
At the car wash.
Back at the house. I really thought I was really over my head with this!
My clay after a quarter of the hood done!!
The whole hood!
Ready to go.
FINISHED!
These pics don't do the interior work any justice. There were some areas I didn't capture but It's definately a MAJOR improvement.
Afters.
I think I missed some stuff just right of the sterring colum....
Here's day 2 over at the Mother-in-law's place. Started out with the cell phone, found my camara later on.
Camara's back!
The etching at the top of the door was too severe for me to get out.
Ran out of time, I was only able to UC the car, still have to finish up putting on the NXT 2.0.
The wife came out to help my finish up, she did the windows.
All in all it took me about 16 hours, the car looks completly different then when I got a hold of it. I still need to get M07 and NXT on it soon.
Thanks for looking!!
