  • Acura TL-S DETAILED & I...

have to say this has been my most difficult detail to date.
I was contacted by a MOL member a couple weeks ago to have his TL-S polished out. We were able to schedule it in for this weekend and so the car was dropped off Friday night.

    Ready for the wash

After the dirt was removed the swirls became more apparent.

I even noticed some water etching on the hood

Once the car was clayed I did my test spot. Rotory with a W-8006 and some 105 did the trick.

I started with the hood, moved on to the driver side front fender all is good and I get to the driver side door and what I had been using so far has no effect on the paint. Ok, let me bring out a W-7006 pad and try 105, ok nothing. Hmmm, Let's bring out the wool pad, so that starts hazing it I don't see a problem. Now, let me go back to the 8006 and some 105 to try and clear up the hazing which it does to some degree. So I break out with the G110, W-7006 and some 83. That worked so well and it only took me about 2 1/2 hours to figure that out I measure the paint and it's reading 7.1, I measure the hood and the fender and it reads 4.6-5.2. It was definitely repainted. I even noticed what I think were sanding marks towards the bottom of the door. so after a few passes I was able to remove the majority of the scratches.

Just a few things I tried out

Rear passenger side panel seems to have been repainted as well. Orange peel anyone?

After piling up the dust on the car it was time for the second wash

    Cleaned up fairly well

There was a scuff that I was able to remove with no issues.

    50/50

The end result after 23 hours

This paint required me to work the product in very slow to be able to produce results. I followed up with M205 & W-8006 on the G110. Topped with NXT 2.0
Interior/trunk was vaccumed and wiped down.

Customer was very kind and was happy with the end results. I'm beat and need some rest.

Excellent work Jesse. Those difficult paint sure does test a person's patience but it sure is rewarding when we step back and see the results.

This particular shot caught my attention. Something about it. Maybe the position of the stuff combined with the lighting *hmm*

Just goes to show you that the rotary isn't always the tool for the job, kudos to you for bringing it back to where it should be.

The car looks amazing. Absolutely stunning. Awesome job. And I agree with Tim - that picture looks very cool. Definitely the lighting.

great work, once again Jesse. The Audi was used and abused. You brought it back to life. Great save. Way to go.

Thanks Tim, this paint did put me to the test. Although it's not 100% overall it was a dramatic difference. As I was sitting on the floor trying to figure out the combo for the driver side door I noticed how the bottles were layed out so I took a shot. Notice how the 105 and 83 red caps are off.

Thank you imacarnut. I think this paint liked the dual action rather than the rotory. .

Thank you very much Colin. I should have taken some sun pics, I was so tired I didn't even feel like moving the car out into the sun light. Serious.

Thanks J.A. Michaels, up close the paint did seem abused. By the way it is an Acura

Well, so much for all those "Japanese cars have soft paint" comments, huh?! Great work Jesse, the car looks fantastic now! It's always interesting to read a write up where the paint behaved in such a way that it really challenged the detailer to think through the issue and arrive at a workable solution. Most interesting is the combination of products that worked when the typical go-to combo wasn't returning the usual result.

                  Again Jesse, well done!

                      Amazing turn-around! Very nice.

May I ask what you used on the exhaust tips?

Thank you. I used NXT metal polish both outsite & inside the exhaust tip.

Thanks Bob. I really was expecting about 13 hours of work but that didn't happen. There were some moments I thought the swirls were below the clear coat but after severaly tries I can see them diminishing. Seems that paint didn't like the wool pad too much either because it was then tough to remove the hazing from the wool even with rotory, 105 and 7006-8006 pads @ different speeds. Glad I had 83 on hand. This car is my new nemesis.

It was a tough job, but I bet you learned a lot too. One key is continuing to work the test spot until you found the right combination. That's a great lesson for others to learn. If nothing else, you learned patience. Also shows that there is not just one solution to fixing a paint problem.

This write up is a great teaching exercise for others.
