  • BMW X3 - IronX thoughts

    2005 BMW X3.

New customer who wanted a premium exterior/interior detail.

As you may have saw from my other thread, I recently picked up some IronX to try out. This X3 was a good initial test subject as it had a lot of contamination that would have taken a good couple of hours to shave off with clay.

IronX is a strong Iron filling/contaminant remover that is acid free and safely decontaminates paint, wheels, & glass. It removes these iron particles & contaminants that detailing clay typically shaves off or only partially removes. It turns reddish purple when it comes in contact with iron particles.

A lot of light colored and especially white paint surfaces on the rear & lower end of vehicles show visible signs of iron particles & contamination. All vehicles that are daily driven have some level of iron & contamination but its a matter of how severe and how visible.

My experience with this product is limited as I only have used it on three vehicles. I have yet to use it on something severely contaminated. I ordered one bottle as well as an extra 1 liter jug so I could use it on at least 8-10 vehicles.

So far I like this product a lot, I wish I had it for all the vehicles I have ever done as I would have saved hours of my time and some clay bars along with it. Leaves the surface feeling very smooth and removes those nasty rust specked looking iron particles from the paint. The color changing is a cool feature to as it allows you to see the exact areas it is bleeding from. It sprays on clear and in some areas will turn color in seconds. You need to let it sit 5-7 minutes to get the best effect and it will not dry up in that time either.

The price is a little steep but at $16 a bottle it still is a nice product. You also need to be sure to rinse very well and use lots of soap and water when it comes to removal time. Those are the only two real negatives I could find with my use.

I will show how I use it on my wash/decon process here.

    Before:

    Pressure wash.
Tires/wells cleaned with Purple Power 1:1.
Wheels cleaned with Wheel Brightener 4:1.
Foamed/washed with NXT Generation Car Wash.
    Clayed while washing.
    Pressure wash.
    IronX decontamination.
    Pressure wash
    Foam gun wash.

    During:

    Foaming:

    Iron X bleeding:

This car had moderate contamination I would say. I sprayed it on after washing, let it sit for nearly ten minutes, and walked around and inspected the whole time. It did not dry up on me which I thought it would. It was hot and still a little sunny in the evening too. I used about 75% of the spray bottle.

The hatch area had the most contamination along with the sides of the vehicle.

Here is the car after all the wash/decon steps are complete:

After cleaning the interior, I finished detailing the exterior of the vehicle.

    Polished/waxed with #66 - Quick Detailer (Cleaner/Wax) via PCXP.
    Tires/wells dressed with Hyper-Dressing 2:1.
    Tar treated with Tarminator.
Trim dressed with All Season Dressing.
Chrome polished with Mothers chrome polish.

    Ext. After:

    Interior:

    Before:

Leather/vinyl cleaned with All Purpose Cleaner & hot water mix.
Carpets shampooed with 3D Carpet Shampoo.
Leather/vinyl dressed with Quik Interior Detailer.
    Jambs washed with ONR.
Glass cleaned with Glass Cleaner Concentrate 10:1.

    After:

Feel free to ask any questions regarding my thoughts on IronX.

Great job on the detail and thanks for sharing your thoughts and views regarding IronX. You pretty much answered all the questions I had.

Wow 75% of the bottle was used for this vehicle. That can get very expensive very quick. Did the clay still pick up contaminants after the IronX application?

Thanks for sharing and taking time to document this process Nick!

              Thanks Marc.

The clay did not pick up much after the IronX which to me shows that the IronX is doing a good job cleaning below the surface of the paint.

I use a Troy Bilt 2600 psi gas unit. For foaming I use a Gilmour foam gun. You should be able to find a quality gas pressure washer at Lowes, Sears, etc. I would avoid the electric ones as they are junk and break easily. The Gilmour foam gun hooks easily up to a regular garden hose and many online retailers carry them.

Have you thought about getting the foam cannon yet for your power washer?? The foam clings so much longer and is so much thicker with a cannon. It is money well spent imo.

Did you smell the IronX, Tuck?

When I first got mine, i opened it, and wandered into another room to look for a sprayer. So I was standing around with the bottle opened.
I started looking for dead cats in my garage, before i understod that it was the bottle in my hand that was the source.

But, great product! It is a good tool to have available in my area, since 90% of all vehicles use studded tires from November to May, and the steel and iron particles that go airbourne from the studs tends to embed into car paint and even start rusting.

If already have a pressure washer I would go with a MTM Hydro Lance. They are around the same price as the Gilmore and they work WAY better.
