  • Hyundai Elantra Touring

This was a car I did today and well it turned out ok minus a couple things. I knew going into the detail that from previous Hyundai's I have done that the paint seems extra hard to me so I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me.

    So the usual:
    1. Wash
    2. Clay
    3. the fun began.....
So as I finished Claying I was water spots or etching all over the hood of the car and thought well that won't be too bad I had them before and removed with out any issues. So on to a test spot of M83 with polishing pad speed 4 and 5. A few passed wiped and checked nothing no change.. Hit it again same thing a little slower and more pressure and nothing. Stepped up to UC with polishing pad speed 5 and again nothing. Well said screw it an went to 105 with the cutting foam pad and guess what? NOTHIN!!! so these water etching are deep and the only way to get them put was wet sanding and a rotary which I have no mastered yet so that was where I stopped. with the hood and roof. The rest of the car was not bad so here is the rest.
Here is a picture of the water etchings you can see around the lights

    4. UC with polishing pad at speed 5
    5. M07 Finishing pad speed 3
    6. NXT 2.0 wax finishing pad speed 2 2 coats
    7. UQD the entire car

Wheels sprayed with Wheel Brightener rinsed then washed with a wheel brush. Wheels were dressed with my favorite NXT Insane Tire Shine.

    Before

    After

On a side note here is what can be achieved with UC and a dull door handle

    Before

    After

I hope you enjoyed all. Happy Detailing

You answered a question I had in your second sentence! I thought I may have been losing touch with my abilities yesterday while correcting a 2008 Veracruz, I know what you mean about Hyundai's paint being extra hard! Wetsanding and a rotary seems like a must for any sort of heavy correction on this clearcoat, Meguiar's microfiber DA system may also be able to tackle it. Looks Good!

I thought maybe the MF System might help but seeing as how I was getting no results seems as a wet sand and rotary will be in order for this car.

        Great work!

Wet sanding + rotary sounds a little drastic at this stage. I would have thought there are a few more options available before you resort to that...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

The pictures doesnt really do a justice as to the severity of the water etchings. I could have tried the MF system but I'd be surpirsed to see that do anything. I tried to get the best pictures I could but had a hard time getting one.

Car looks great. It's hard to achieve that level of gloss and wetness on lighter colors, but you really managed.

If you don't feel you've quite mastered the rotary buffer just yet, and after trying the DAMF System (which we highly recommend here) you still can't get rid of the water spot etching, have a read through The Power of 3000 Grit and see if you might be able to work that into your process on this car.

Thank Michael for the info. I haven't seen the 3000 grit thread yet. Maybe this is want the Meguiar's Doctor ordered.
