  • Making A Switch

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section but I was not sure where to post.

I am a college kid with a lot of love for car detailing. I grew up always washing the family cars, worked at a full service car wash in high school where I got into detailing, and now detail cars on the side for cash during the summer. I absolutely love meguiars and always buy their products. I mainly do applications by hand, but also have an old black and decker orbital polisher that my high school shop teacher gave me.

So my question is..... I have always bought the consumer line of products. If i am looking to switch to the professional line, how much better is it and will I be safe to use it??? Although I do have some experience, I am terrified of using a compound and messing up the paint. I really enjoy the consumer line but im looking to take the next step. Do you think I would be better off just getting the G110 and sticking with consumer? Or using pro and the G110?

The Professional and Detailer Lines of products are not better or worse than the Consumer Line, it is just a wider array or products to tackle different situations and application methods. And most can come in a bulk size which can save some money. There are mild cleaners and very strong cleaners, just like in the Consumer line.

You will certainly be able to remove swirls easier on customers cars with a G110, and the bulk size can also be good for a business.

You really should evaluate that question on a situation by situation, and product by product basis.

With the new 2009 products like Ultimate Compound, ScratchX 2.0, and SwirlX most people won't need a professional line product.

If you do though, there are plenty of effective, yet safe products to use. M205 certainly comes to mind.

Yeah, as said, the professional line isn't necessarily any "better."

If you want a G110, I say go for it. It's great, for working with the paint cleaners you might already use like the new products Ultimate Compound (it's not as scary as the name) and Swirl X, or Scratch X 2.0. With the G110 and those products, you could remove defects in most paints. I would actually probably recommend these products more than the older professional products like #80 and #83, which are great too, but a bit harder to use, as they're more traditional technology.

I could really only see needing a professional cleaner/compound if there was so serious defects that you needed the strong #105.

Of course, if you want to try a pure polish, to nourish the paint, darken the color temporarily, you could use #7 professional polish, but polish is always an optional step, this is a good product.

Finally, there are a couple waxes in professional line, you might try. #26 Hi Tech Yellow wax in liquid or paste, makes a car look gorgeous and feel really slick. However, it's longevity won't be quite as good as NXT. There is also #21 liquid sealant, which is very similar to NXT.

Overall, Meguiar's consumer line contains some of their very best technology, so it's not as though professional line is a step up, it's just slightly different products.

Finally, there are also a couple more quick detailers in the professional line, to choose from.

          Re: Making A Switch

I made the switch because autozone or other places never stocked any larger quantity items. So I googled bulk meguiars and stumbled upon ADS. Thats where I got more interested. I just think you get more bank out of your buck if you buy in bulk and you do detailing on the side. And like mentioned before, there are more options out there.

I still use some consumer products and professional ones as well.
Nothing wrong with Mix and matching.
