  • Body Solvent vs. Bug & Tar Remover

All I want to know is if Body Solvent is more effective at removing dried bugs than Bug & Tar remover.

Anybody have personal experience using both products?

I personally have only used Body Solvent. I have a customer that was unsuccessful at removing bugs with Bug & Tar remover. I'll suggest other methods ie. drier sheet, clay etc. They may have etched the paint I don't know. All I really need to know for now is if Body Solvent is definitively a strong/more effective product.

Re: Body Solvent vs. Bug & Tar Remover

Living in bug heaven maybe I can toss out an idea.

I've tried the dryer sheet trick (using it damp) on a FG RV, it did work. BUT (big but there) along with the bugs being removed ALL OF THE WAX was gone also.

One thing that does work for me on both FG and our vehicles is to use a 3M WHITE backed sponge. Don't do any 'hard' rubbing, just nice gentle agitation with lotza shampoo as a lube. If the surface is not 'pristine', more passion is warranted. You can also get just the white pads from your local janitor supply co. Don't remember the part number, but the term 'Doodle Bug Pad" is/are the key words. Also it helps to let the pad soak some and kinda 'scrunch' it up to help loose its' newness.

    Hope this helps some.

Thanks Bill, but it does not help.

All I want to know is how Body Solvent compares to Bug & Tar Remover.

I resell Meguiar's products and it would be nice to hear comparisons between the two products, so I can give better product recommendations (within the Meguiar's product line) to my customers. I can't afford the time or the money to consume and compare every product in the Meguiar's product line. Hopefully someone on the forum has experience comparing the two products.

        Bill,

Sorry, I completely misread your question. The only bug remover I've ever used (back when I still lived in Seattle) was, "Splat."

That's cool thanks for trying. I'm sure I'll solve the customer's bug issue one way or another. However, I don't want to ship a gal. of Body Solvent to him and then having him end up disappointed. He already tried Bug & Tar remover with no success.

It's a black 350Z. He doesn't have a DA Polisher yet, so we don't want to introduce swirls if it can be avoided.

He says he can still feel the bugs, so I'm not convinced that the paint is etched. He's supposed to send me a few photos.

          Thanks again,

I often use the Meg's bug & tar remover. It works well to remove any hard sticky stuff. I use it during a wash and let the area set for a few minutes before rinsing. No hard rubbing necessary, the b&t removes the sticky.
But, it should be used during a wash, or at least when a water rinse bottle is available. B&T product leaves a residue that must be rinsed off.

I use Turtle Wax Bug and Tar Remover. It works pretty good for what I want it to do.

I personally have not had much success with the body solvent in removing bugs. I must be doing something wrong. However the bug and tar usually does the trick. There have been occasions that I had to follow up with a dryer sheet.

Maybe your client is not letting the bug and tar dwell long enough?

I'm not sure about the clients methods.

I'm surprised that you find Bug & Tar to be more effective on bugs. Good to know. Thanks J.A.

                    Bill,

I recently tried using some APC Plus on bugs and was quite impressed actually.

I let it dwell for about a minute and then proceeded to agitate the paint with my wash mitt and bug sponge.

Re: Body Solvent vs. Bug & Tar Remover

Bill, if it's the Turtle Wax version of Bug and Tar Remover, in a black spray bottle that he used, it's pretty good stuff. I've had better success on the really stubborn partially etched marks with that very product than I've had with Meg's Body Solvent. The Turtle Wax just takes individual scrubbing on each and every bug gut spot. Kind of slow going compared to spraying the Body Solvent over the whole front end and agitating with the bug sponge. My normal routine is to use the Body Solvent first and any leftover spots I'll try the Turtle Wax on them. If that doesn't remove the mark ... it's there for good ... less some wet sanding be introduced.

                        +1

APC+ is my go to product for bug splatter, especially if its been on there for more than 24-48 hrs. Mist it on, 4:1 ratio, dwell agitate lightly, thoroughly rinse, soap, rinse then dry...follow up with your choice of sealant or wax..

                          All great tips.

Once thing I can tell you is if you cannot feel the, and you get no feed back from claying, then whats left is etching and for most who do not paint correct, they are in trouble.
