  • Ranchid Acidic Smell from My Meguiar's Gold Class Paste Wax

sI have a couple of assorted brand liquid and paste car waxes that's been sitting in my garage for 10~11 years. Some are acquired around 8 years ago, some 3~4 years ago.

The only ones that smell bad are the Meguiar's Cleaner Wax (in paste) and the Gold Class Clear Coast Paste Wax.

It's a very strong, ranchid, and acidic smell that stings your nostrils when you take a close whiff at it.

Anyway, I tried the Gold Class wax yesterday. Put a coat on my black benz and it's easy on easy off as always.

The smell isn't obvious if you keep your distance though. Odd..

Just wondering if anybody's had the same experience as I had. From what little info I was able to dig up with google, the ranchid smell is apparently a sign of the wax gone bad.

I got worried and opened all my stock of car waxes today. Since none of my other waxes gave off any unusual smells, i'm assuming they're still all good. I have some Armorall, Blue Coral, Rain-X, and Eagle One branded carnauba paste waxes that dates much earlier than the Meguiars but they all seemed fine. No discoloration, no separation, and the smell is the same as the day I opened them ages ago.

Today I tried a turtle wax branded carnauba wax paste that I bought 10 years ago. It still applies smooth and wiped off easily.

I know the shelf life is supposedly 3~5 years for car waxes. But is that really the case?

If it smells that bad then I would say it has turned bad.

I don't like to use synthetic waxes. But I do have them. I've got Nu Finish and an autofoam from Blue Coral. Older models, but they work fine. For some reason I just prefer to use carnauba wax.

By the way, has anyone used Armorall's car wax Diamond Hard Shine? I see some at my local parts shop closing out for $6 each. Wondering if I should get them. These seem to be a blend of carnauba wax and petroleum distillates.

It smelled good. Almost like a honey/ nectar / leather smell. The smell is still there. But only after I buffed it out of the paint.

MAYBE its due to certain changes to comply with new environmental considerations (??), and if so, may have affected the life of the waxes. other ingredients that may not have been regulated in the past are now strictly controlled or banned, and these ingredients while may have been ok to use gives the waxes of the past gives the waxes longer shelf life.

As for armor all, it sounds synthetic to me.. there should be no harm in trying it, especially if you like trying out waxes.

Carnauba waxes while more "traditional" or even "old fashioned in an era of synthetic polymers.." gives a shine that some synthetics can only approximate. It gives more depth, paint color really comes out, gives a nice wet look, short of saying the paint comes alive. Its no wonder many enthusiasts prefer carnauba wax products..

A very bad odor is usually a sign that a product has gone bad, so it sounds as though that's the case here. When a product "goes bad" it usually causes problems with application, removal or general performance of the product but there is no concern for the product damaging the paint. If you find the product still performs as it should then you can continue to use it (provided the odor isn't overly offensive to you!). Overall, however, we would suggest you dispose of the unused portion and switch to a fresh container.

Isn't the ultimate wax fully synthetic? i am more partial to carnauba based waxes. Anyway, it will be a long while before i finish up my stock of waxes. Been applying them on and off every couple of weeks. Hopefully I'll run out of these old waxes by the end of the year! ^^
