Ultimate Compound & Polish question

I tried using UC compound and polish on my daily driver, applied with my DA and the correct Meg's pads. I had a heck of a time wiping the residue off when I was finished. I had to mist with a Meg's detailer spray to remove the residue. The surface was cool (it was only 55 degrees in my garage).
What am I doing wrong? To much product?, To slow, to fast with my speed settings? Im really at a lose here.
Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bob,

How large of area are you working in at a time? How many passes would you say you were doing in each section? Also, as far as the amount of product, ideally you should be wiping off a light, wet, translucent film, with a high quality microfiber towel.

Hey Nicholas,

I was working on the hood and I usually do 1/4 section at a time. Maybe 6 to 7 passes at a time.

It seems that by the time I go to wipe, the product is dry and difficult to remove.

Im sure it's an error on my part, just trying to figure out how to correct it.

Im just a hobbyist, I don't do this for a living.

For the compound & polish step, if you are not already depending on the size of the hood, work in small, 16 inch square - 2 foot square areas at a time, and also try less passes, around 3 - 5 passes. The product should break down to a light wet film, this is when it is easiest to wipe off. Keep an eye on the amount of product on the paint surface when buffing, if it looks like it getting close to dry, stop and wipe off. If product ever does dry on the paint, you can always re-apply more wet product directly over the dried product to make it easy to remove.

One final question, Megs's cleaner wax is still one of my favorites. Can Meg's Classic polish and compound be applied with a DA or are these products for hand application only.

Just to add to what Nick said, if you overwork UC or UP it will become difficult to remove.

Also, I've found with most of Meg's (SMAT) polishes and compounds, they work better with a bit more product on the pad than say something that was a DAT type polishes that most other companies use.

5-7 section passes is probably past the point where the polish is effective. There is more paint residue than abrasives at that point. Doing 3-4 section passes and then wiping off will allow you to keep the paint residue in better control. You'll have better results cutting and finishing. And as a bonus you won't be fighting to get the polish off of the paint when you are done.

If you are referring to our "Clear Coat Safe Rubbing Compound & Clear Coat Safe Polishing Compound," these are for hand application only, and not designed to be applied by machine.

After watching the video I believe that I'm over working the compound & polish. I will reduce my number of passes.
