    I would write this.

I like spending money on cars that are very hard to get parts for, that will cost a small fortune to fix if it breaks down, but don't hate me just because your first car was a 1971 Pinto

Hmm.... do you have a more specific description of your assignment? I hesitate to offer advice where I'm not sure exactly what the instructor is looking for. I am inclined to think he doesn't want a paper on how to detail/recondition a used car, though. Until I see some more clarification, I'll take a blind stab at this though.

I would try to stick to a bit more broad format, as a general rule. Not to be cliche, but if I were to take a stab at a classic "5-paragraph essay" format for this, an outline might look like:

Thesis Statement: "The purchase of this 1984 Rolls Royce is justifiable for several reasons, including mechanical condition, reconditionability, and 'cool factor,'"

Intro: Description of chosen used car, thesis statement.
Body Par. 1: Mechanical Condition of Vehicle, Reliability
Body Par. 2: Reconditionability (BRIEF, somewhat nondescript explanation of detailing process, what defects are repairable. Do NOT get product-specific unless this is asked for by the assignment.)
Body Par. 3: "Cool Factor" - The most important by far. Most would argue a Rolls Royce isn't exactly reliable as a "driver" car, so you have to factor in how an RR may or may not be a wise choice.
Conclusion: Determine justifiability of the purchase, using your main points from the paper to support your decision.

My concern simply is that by going too deep into the reconditioning process, and being product specific, the paper will come across more like a report on detailing using Meguiar's products, if not an advertisement. This could either be exactly what the instructor wants, or it could be so far off that you recieve a big, fat, hairy, smelly, flaming "F" on the assignment.

And, presuming this possibly to be a class for potential future workers within the automotive field professionally, you'll want to use professional products in your description if you DO end up going in that direction with the assignment (IF that is what fits) instead of consumer-line stuff. And even then, I'd focus on process more than product.

OK, I think that's enough from the sleep deprived collegiate writing consultant for now.

maybe a better reference point would be an '80 Chevette?
