  • Whats going on with my paint

Okay, last month my dad gave me his '99 GMC Jimmy with 93,000 miles. Full opitions, leather interior, climate control, 4x4, compass, memory seats, ect... everything, sweet ride to just have handed to you...

The 93,000 miles are mostly highway (the orginal brakes have about 60 percent of thier life still) and car has always been maintained mechanically. However, it had spent about half its life outside, unprotected in the Florida sun, and to my knowledge the only time it was washed or waxed was at a drive thru cleaner. The paint was rough (its black with a gold bottom) but after some TLC and the Meg's DC1-DC3 it has a deep gloss once again. (Although it defaintly has swirls in it in direct sunlight, but those wil be taken care of when the G-100 and DACP arrive)Infact so deep that at night I have had 3 people ask me if I like my "brand new" SUV at gas stations although GMC doesn't even produce a Jimmy anymore.

But here is my problem... When I first detailed it I noticed a small 1" section on the hood that looked cracked, all the way to the primer. No biggie I figured, probably from the paint being dry or whatever. I also noticed a couple marks that looked like little dots that went to the primer with the 1 or 2 deep cracks coming from them only going out about 1cm or so.

Well I was the car yesterday and waxed it with Cleaner/Wax and I noticed about 20 more of these pin-holes now, with the cracks coming out. So I push on one coner of my hood and 3 more cracks appear. I now fear that the paint on the hood is toast (son of a *****). It is almost like the paint is brittle now. So what caused this, causes it and how can I try to rehab the paint so that more cracks/splits doen't appear in the next year or so?

P.S. sorry for my horrible impersonation of spelling, but English is my second lanauage, lol. Also I scored a 780 out of 800 on the English porition of the SAT's, but still have no idea on how to spell anything

    Clear Coat Failure.
    Repaint is only option.
Continue to clean and wax to slow down spread.
    Sorry

Sounds like the clear coat is dying on you especially from your description of the environment it has been exposed to...

The only thing you can do is try to slow it down by keeping it polished and waxed, and if at all possible, keep it out of the sun.

Other than that it sounds like a nice rig and down the road if you really like this truck it would be a good candidate to have repainted.

      How about a picture?

Also, if these cracks and swirls are deep, or even through the paint, then chances are good you will not be able to remove them with the dual action polisher. You can probably improve them, but not completely remove them.

Thanks for the replies, I figured as much. I'm not really bummed because its a great ride and I don't mind the possiblilty of springing for a repaint in a year or so.

As far as removing the swirls, they don't appear deep, just scratches or micro abrasions from bad washing techinques and normal use. I will take pictures next time I am at my parents (I don't have access to a digital camera at this time).
