  • Saran wrap on cars

This is a rather odd question. Can saran wrap do any damage to the paint of a car? The cool thing to do is to saran wrap peoples cars(i dont think it is that cool). Is there any way that the saran wrap could scratch the paint?

I dont know about scratching, could be a possibility, but some people who have put plastic covers on their cars have ended up with staining/etching in the paint, presumably from the plastic trapping humidity.

Or if you turned the enging on and the plastic melted.....

Usually the saran wrap remains on there for less than an hour. I think it is stupid, but i just wanted to know if i should try and convince my friends not to do it. Also , i dont think it would be very likely for a person to start there car when it is covered in saran wrap, so i am not worried about the heat of the engine melting it.

If there was dirt trapped underneath it I think it would probably scratch the paint.

          Correct.

If the finish on your car is polished to perfection but not spotlessly clean, and someone wraps your car with plastic wrap, it's almost guaranteed that in some way, during the applying or removal process, dirt on the car is going to be ground-into the paint.

Hope this kind of prank doesn't happen to any of our members or our members customer's cars.

Why would someone think it's COOL to do that?

Seems like more of a hassle to actualy do..... too much effort for a prank that a pair of scissors will remove in seconds.

I have seen several cars entering car show gates with saran wrap on the front ends of their cars to keep the bugs and road grime off on the way to the show. After they are parked in their space, they remove the wrap and a quick detail wipe and they are all set.

Sometime ago some guys used shrink wrap on a car, it was nice and hot out and it did 'shrink' breaking the antenna off and on removal it broke the rear window wiper off.

I thought Saran Wrap was optional clothing for girls.

If the paintwork is hot, saran wrap can melt. I've seen it on a client's Audi A4 1.8T which did not have heat insulation and there was etching. Beware...

If nothing else, it could provide me with a chance to get more experience buffing out some of my friends cars. It is pretty stupid and petty. But boys will be boys.
