  • Trip to the DEALER

Those of you that may take your vehicle to the dealer for regular maintenance/repairs:

How do you go about telling them that its ok to NOT wash your car after they are done?

Just wondering, haven't done it but would like some suggestions from other car crazies, don't want to sound too demanding.

Well, I say don't wash it. It isnt as if they mind doing less work. Although when I bought my car, they were almost begging me to let them wash it.

But if you had a real flaky dealership, taping some signs to the steering wheel never hurts.

tape signs on all the windows saying "DO NOT WASH!" "in case of fluids dripped on paint, DO NOT TOUCH!"

and then you can just stand outside and watch them the whole time....

Some receptionists take a few minutes to go round the vehicles looking for dings and scratches, spare wheel etc...What has been seen is then noted and signed by receptionist and car owner. After that inspection you could ask the receptionist to please note that you do not want your vehicle to be washed.

            I put a couple of large 8 1/2 x 11" pages in the car saying;

            Do Not Wash
            Do Not Clean Interior
            No Tire Dressing

along with being emphatic with the service consultant.

I once told the service manager to please not wash my car and he asked me why. I told him I had taken a look at his wash station/machine and it scared me. He chuckled and said he'd give it back to me dirty (I knew his was a tongue in cheek comment). I told him to look at the car now, it is most definitely NOT dirty!!!

Bet the service manager chuckled one more time when he saw how clean was your car.

I was at a Toyota dealership a while ago and the service writer asked me why I didn't want them touching the paint. I pointed over to one of the service bays where a kid was wiping up spilled oil off the fender of a black toyota with a shop rag. I asked him if I needed to explain further. He shook his head as I told him to skip the service as I was taking my car somewhere else. I found a new dealership.

I just dont go to the dealership.

The dealership around home is not good at all. I had to take it to them to get some recall work done and didnt need to worry about them washing it. They are not good enough to try and be 'nice.'

I just tell the service writer, please don't wash my car. I tell him I am going to do it when I get home. Then while the car is being serviced I go over to the kids that are washing the cars and point out my car and tell them no washing. So far this has worked like a charm for me.

Got it, I will try verbal then the signs if the message does not get through.

                        Will keep you posted,

On a side note have the dealership people ever asked YOU where you got your car done?

I tell the Service Rep no car wash, and he has typed in the service report "NO WASH". But to be sure, I tape a "NO CAR WASH" note on the gear shift.

I tell them no car wash, and make sure I detail it so it gives the impression that none is needed.

I always take it clean, wash it before taking it and they've never washed it.
