    What are you paying for electric?

    Just curious to see what everyone around the country is paying for electric. Here in Texas, we have several different providers to chose from. But instead of driving the cost down, it does the opposite.

    We have a 1500sqft house, all electric, keep the thermostat set at 78 during the day and 74 at night, and our electric bill runs right at $300 per month.

    What are you guys/gals paying per month?

    Just got my bill yesterday, it was about $55. I have a 1,000 s.f. house, keep the air at 78 when I'm not home and 74 when I'm home.

    How much do you pay per Kwh?

      $55?

      We have a good rate(for Texas) at 14.4c per kwh

        Don't stress too much over mine. I have spent a lot of time and a bit of money to make my house as efficient as possible.

        I pay 10.7c per Kwh. So your rate is a bit higher but it looks like your usage is way higher.

        I'm guessing your big energy hog is your AC. Have you had it tuned up lately? Are the coils clean? Is the condenser clean and not blocked with shrubs?

        Make sure your refrigerator coils are clean too and there is enough space behind it for air flow.

        I've switched to almost all compact florescent too. My basement had (4) 100w bulbs in it but how has (4) 15w bulbs. That's 400w down to 60w.

        If you want a fun gizmo (well fun for me, but I'm nerdy that way) check out a Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor. Just plug in what ever for the day and it will tell you how many Kwh it is using.

        On the plus side (for you anyway)... I bet my gas bill is a lot higher than yours in the winter.

          Yeah, I need to do something to get these costs down. My girlfriend is about to pull her hair out with me running around turning off lights, turning the AC down, giving everyone 15 minute showers before I start complaing about hot water usage....Ugh, I've become my father

            Our bill in the summer cooling a 1400 sq. feet is Around 180.00 a month. However in the winter it averages about 95.00. Thats keeping it at 76 degrees during the summer. In the 4 winters That we have been here, I bet we have not turned the heat on 10 total for all the winters combined. Our Kwh rate is 10.02cents. I am more concerned about the fact that our usage jumped 12 kwh a day over last year. But thats how I look at things. Our Daughter was still living at home last year. So common sense says your electric should go down. With her gone. Less showers blow drying her hair, not watching her tv,etc. But not ours. It goes up.

              1600 sq foot house 2 kids, AC on 74-76 all day and night, always a TV on, a computer on and our fish tank. Highest bill so far was $214 (here the electric bill includes water, sewer and garabage)

                Here in Kaleefornia it's about 19 (buisness rate) to 23 (residential rate) cents per kw IIRC. In the summer we leave four ceiling fans going 24/7 and the program to keep the house between 76 and 78 when we're away at work and 72 from 4PM till bedtime when we just open up the windows (98% of the time anyway...usually a nice cool sea breeze at night) Top bill in the summer is about $125 which drops to $45 in winter. Gas in the winter for heat just reverses the electric for the same comfort level.

                Rates are always higher here than a lot of the country but not as bad as the year we were buying power from Enron

                  I don't have air living so close to the coast in So. Ca. But it is important to clean the coils on the fridge and make sure your dryer vent is clean. The clogged vent is the #1 reason for house fires! I have even taken the dryer apart and cleaned all of the lint out. OCD maybe?

                    Nah (but my wife does), I do the same thing.

                    My bill usually runs about 75 bucks, hot water and lights, use fluorscent lights and scream at the kids to turn the lights off, just like my dad did to me "You think we own the power company meathead?"

                        We pay .0809 per KwH from June to September then it drops somewhat after that.
                        The house is 1200 sq. ft. The last bill was $78. We also have 2 very large oak trees shading the house from the sun. However it invites birds who do dive bombing on my car.

                        The AC is a newer American Standard 12 SEER. T-stat is at 76*F.

                        I have also put more insulation in the attic and covered the outside wall outlets with those foam insulators. They really help.

                          Here in NE Indiana my rate is .075 per KwH. I have a ranch over a walk-out basement. 1650 sq ft upstairs, 1650 sq ft downstairs. The house is only 4 years old, is well insulated, tyvek wrapped, and has energy efficient windows. It is total electric with geothermal heating & cooling. My electric bill for the last 30 months has averaged $125 per month. IMHO if you can geothermal is the way to go for heating & cooling. I keep my house 70-72 in the winter 74-76 in the summer.

                            What type of system do you have? I'm guessing a closed loop? Deep or shallow?
