  • Polish Your Grill / BBQ Smoker?

Anyone here ever put polish on their grills / BBQ smoker? I've got 2, one is a 5 burner Ducane (all stainless steel) and the second is a Vermont Castings 3 burner (mostly stainless). I'd like to put something on them, but I don't know what.

Would there be any Meguiar's products that would protect these from the elements (food / moisture / etc.) Also, are Meguiar's products tested in that type of heating conditions? They often get up to 500-600 degrees.

Feel free to move this, but I figured the Break Room would be a good start.

    Thanks.

You could use the Nxt Metal Polish or the Hot Rims Mag and Aluminum on the stainless parts.

I would be concerned about the heat aspect. I think most dark paint surfaces only usually hit 140* in hot weather. I wouldn't imagine most waxes would be safe or effective at those temperatures. Maybe someone else with more product knowledge can inform us. Someone bust out the Mike P. signal.

I'm not sure how good it would look, but maybe you could try M87 High Temp Mold Release wax...

The problem with using a polish on brushed stainless steel is that it will do it's job and polish the metal, thus removing some of the brushed look. There are some 3M pads that can be used to match the scratch pattern, though.

I've got some Eagle One Nano polish (it was free after rebate) lying around here somewhere, I'll give it a shot on the Vermont Castings. It has a little stainless steel, but not a lot. I'm just looking for a light barrier between the grill and the elements.

          Thanks for the tips

            FWIW:

On my New Braunfels offset smoker... I don't use anything except some APC on the inside every few years. There's rust on the outside but, I never expected it to maintain it's "finish".

OTOH...my Weber Spirit 2 burner...it states explicitly in the owner's docs NOT to put anything on the enamel paint surface as it has a tendency to streak the finish. The manual also states be especially wary of citrus based cleansers on the interior grill parts. They recommend an extra fine SOS pad on the grates and catch tray and/or a brass grill brush for the SS grates.

I probably can use some metal polish on the doors as they are stainless steel. That might make it easier to keep the fingerprints off.

I did notice that my rather pricey cover was looking a little faded so, I put some protectant on it and it's looking better than new and beading water better than before.

Never even thought about resealing the cover. Mine has taken some abuse as well, especially in the TN heat. Also, I agree with Weber about streaking the enamel finish. My Vermont Castings has an enamel top, but stainless sides. I'll try some polish on the sides and report back.

What did you use on your grill cover?

Re: Polish Your Grill / BBQ Smoker?

We have a stainless steel Barbecue and here's our normal routine, note we don't polish out the stainless steel with a metal polish as we're happy just to keep it clean, if you want to polish it out you can try one of our metal polishes, but not the Chrome Polish.

Clean the inside with Easy Off Oven Cleaner as needed, we barbecue quite a bit to keep the house cool plus we like to barbecue. This involves simple dismantling of the internals, spraying on the Easy Off Oven Cleaner and letting it do it's thing and then scrubbing and rinsing till cleaned enough to call it good.

For the outside we wash with Dawn to cut any film residue off the stainless steel. After it's washed, cleaned and re-assembled we either wipe down the stainless steel using glass cleaner and microfiber polishing cloths and I think we've used Meguiar's Lemon Oil to wipe it down also and afterwords give the stainless a final wipe so there's no residue on the surface.

Meguiar's Lemon Oil was discontinued but there are products like this as well as Stainless Steel cleaning products that you can find at Smart & Final I believe.

I never clean the inside of my grills or smoker. I liked them well seasoned!

Make sure you never use oven cleaner on Aluminum. It will cause a bad reaction, and damage the aluminum. Will be OK on SS however

Re: Polish Your Grill / BBQ Smoker?

Just wanted to post a follow-up on this thread.

I used a bit of the Eagle One Nano Metal Polish on the stainless portions of my Vermont Castings and I really liked the results. The steel is probably NOT coated from the factory since my microfiber turned black where I used the product. If nothing else, I think the polish will provide a barrier to the elements and keep the metal looking good.

I'd assume that NXT Metal Polish would work equally as well. Once I get a can if it from ADS, I'll give it a shot.

Regurgitating an old thread, as I didn't want to start another.

I have used Meguiar's M02 on the outside of my Weber kettles to clean them up. No need for wax, especially since the high temps would probably burn them off on first use. But the M02 (Fine Cut Cleaner) works nicely to remove the grunge, water spots, etc. that accumulate over the months. And while the finish isn't exactly like a brand new kettle, it looks good enough and has a shine to it.

I'm smoking a rack of spare ribs on mine right now. Takes about 5-6 hours...enjoy the smell if you're downwind.
