  • wreck... very sad day

So today/tonight was not one of the best days I've ever had to say the least. My girlfriend took out IS300 to Knoxville for the weekend (3 hours from home) with a friend to watch the Tennessee-Alabama game, and once she got there this is what happened...

She was driving on the interstate doing about 75, the same speed as everyone else, after just getting into Knoxville. The person in front of her slammed on their brakes, so she slammed on hers, but the guy behind her IN A F350! (which was raised much highed than they already are with HUGE tires), never saw anyone brake (we have reason to believe he was texting, and he is not yet 18 either), and rammed straight into the back of her stopped car doing 75-80 mph. My girlfriend and her friend were both rushed to the hospital and by the grace of God neither have any internal damage or broken bones. Just severe stiffness, soreness, a lot of pain, and back/shoulder spasms. I immediately got in my car and rushed down there to spend the next 7 hours there before just getting back home about an hour ago. It's almost 4 a.m. here and I just can't sleep so I thought I would share this with you guys. The main thing is they are both going to be OK after suffering for a few weeks the doc said. But aside from that, we just got the thing paid off last month (bought it brand new 5 years ago with 4 miles on it, it now has 82k), AND i just spent 4 hours detailing it this morning before she left. Don't know if I'll be sleeping tonight.

Oh and I forgot to mention, this car has been babied even though it was a daily driver, and never had any structural damage (until today) or mechanical work done to it. It was truly an awesome car, never any problem whatsoever.

The main thing is everyone is ok. My grandfather taught me a long time ago. Cars can be replaced. People can't.

        Sorry about the loss.

I am really glad that everyone is relatively fine. I know how disappointing this situation is, but the the important thing - life - has been preserved.

I am glad your girlfriend and her friend are alright. While we have a passion for cars (and properly clean ones at that), they can be replaced, you loved one cannot. Be thankful that you car was well designed and did what it was supposed to do in a crash.

Thanks for all the replies and kind words everyone. You guys are saying what I keep having to tell my girlfriend: that cars can be replaced and people can not. All that matters is they are still alive and going to get back to normal soon. She is just really upset that the car has to be totaled out, she loved that car. The police and paramedics told her that the car was built really well, and that they have seen this happen to other makes of cars and the driver and passenger did not make it. So we're just counting our blessings right now.

Not to make light of this whole thing, but since everyone is going to be ok, what do you guys think of the reflection shot the camera man took for insurance purposes?

Everyone's OK and that's the most important thing! The Lexus did it's job very well and protected the occupants. It is amazing that the injuries were not more serious given the amount of damage.

Still is is very sad to lose a car that you've become attached to. Try to look at the positives, though I know it's hard to right now. Lexus typically has very good resale value so you should get a good insurance settlement. Now you can go out and get a Lexus IS F. Or maybe an IS350.

This would be nice, guess I'll have to wait and see what insurance says I'll be getting for it tomorrow.
