  • Angered slightly.

So yesterday the fuel pump in my car gave out. i grabbed a rollback towtruck and had it towed to a friends shop.
from there i told the manager that my friend and I would be doing the pump change after hours (where i commonly do work on my car) my friend has more experience with fuel pumps than i do, and i figured he could help

The manager said he would give me the company cost for the pump because im kind of strapped for cash being in college and all.
    no problem.
put the car on a lift in bay 5 (never used by the company) and was heading back over this morning when i get a call.

    Hey, its *x*x*x* from *x*x*x*.
me: yeah i know im coming over now to start working on my fuel pump
*x*x*x*: theres actually been a change of plans man.
me: oh? what are the changes.
*x*x*x*: I cant give you the company discount on the pump.
me: alright thats fine ill pick it up on my way over.
*x*x*x*: and you cant work on it with your friend in bay 5
me: why not? we had an agreement last night

(I used to work there, so they are usually pretty good with me. however *x*x*x* was a new manager at this shop)

*x*x*x*: yeah well I cant let you do that, so you can get the pump at regular cost and we will install it for you. but its going to cost you 1.8hrs labor...
me: WHAT!? what ever happened to, bring it over fix it and get on your way?
*x*x*x*: cant do that. i hope you understand, we need business
me: so you wait til my car has been towed there, put on a lift and you have the key in a lock box to tell me this?
*x*x*x*: well we can push it back out if you want to, but we wont tow it somewhere else.
me: I TOWED IT TO YOU MYSELF.
*x*x*x*: you have until 4 o clock to bring the pump, or i will charge you shop fees for that and get it myself. regardless the car will be ready tonight.
    *click*

now, the pump for this car is 285dollars. they were going to get it for 250 and pass on the savings.
I paid 80 dollars to get the car towed to said location.
and i was going to give my friend 60 dollars and lunch for helping me.
    250+60+80=390 dollars

now they are going to charge me 290 for the pump, and 190 for installation. i already paid for the tow truck myself.
    480 + 80 = 560 dollars.

I DONT HAVE that much money which is why they said they would help me out. i know there really isnt anything i can do. every place else around here wont give me any discounts either and all are roughly the same cost. but i would have to tow the truck again.

the jerk knows i dont have a car to go pick up the pump, so what can i do? sit here and complain apparently. sorry about grammar, spelling, punctuation. im very very frustrated right now/.

    Re: Angered slightly.

Do you have a pick and pull near you, sometimes they have parts in that are already stripped off cars. Or you can go to a chevy wrecking yard to get a fuel pump. they might have a fuel pump. Check ebay too, sometimes you can get parts dirt cheap. Hope everything works out.

      Ouch!

      I feel your pain.

Assuming your version of the phone call conversation is accurate then it might be time to cut your losses, have the truck towed home and move forward from there.

Sometimes things like this happen and while it may not be fair sometimes all you can do is cut your losses and make the best decision you can. I you don't have the money to have them do the repair then take the truck home and wait till you get the funds to do it yourself in your garage, driveway or parking space. Not always fun but sometimes you're only option.

One option I've used in situations like this is to install a universal electric fuel pump that can be purchased at any auto parts store for around $30.00

You can mount this to the frame somewhere by the gas tank, connect the fuel lines to it, wire it up and you're back on the road.

Getting a used fuel pump off a wrecked car is also another good option when money is tight. Then down the road you can always swap it out with a new one when you have the funds. If you go to the wrecking yard see if you can find two fuel pumps, keep one as a spare, it's never fun breaking down on the side of the highway because your fuel pump goes out.

This happened to me when I bought a 1974 260Z, I ended up buying the universal electric fuel pump at the local NAPA store, some wire and a couple of tools and on the side of the road with a little perspiration I was back on the road and drove the car 400 mile home.

      Where there's a will there's a way...

Also... take a deep breath... life is full of hills and valleys and things will get better.

        Re: Angered slightly.

to the first responder: I would but i have to travel 500+ miles each way 3 times in the next month, so having a new fuel pump with a warranty would benefit me greatly.

To Mike: I hope things get better, this has been a decent car to me, its just when it seems everything is well and good, that something goes wrong.

i have been busy reinstalling an ignition system in my brothers civic to have some local transportation.

I called my friend from a different shop and he is buying me the fuel pump now for a lot less than i thought it would be the same pump is going to be 200$ and he said he will deliver it to the company on my behalf. his shop is a lot further away and therefore its more convenient for me to get the pump and have it installed at the *x*x*x* place than to have it towed to the next county and get it installed cheaper.

hopefully the car will be running again soon. as for now.

car doesnt look to bad on the tow truck either :-p

thanks guys! keep the feedback rollin.

            Re: Angered slightly.

spoke with the manager in person. its nice to know he still has a brain and some intelligence.
after some careful consideration, he decided to lower the cost of the fuel pump back to the company's cost. and I ended up installing it myself with my friends assistance for a 50 dollar shop fee.

done and back on the road.

apparently the hardest part is just dropping the tank.

good to hear he came to his senses, and honored the original agreement to an extent.

                    Re: Angered slightly.

thanks guys! im just glad i got it taken care of in about 24 hrs after getting it towed. the shop guys are for the most part great friends of mine, they help me out whenever they can, with anything from something "im not comfortable doing" letting me use the lifts for oil changes. im glad the manager came to his senses and helped out a bit. but still it leaves little for christmas gifts to my family without some overtiem.

glad to hear you got it fixed. I had a pretty bad streak of luck at the end of last year, and I know I'm glad that's over
