  • It's a great picture.......NOT!!

I'm sure we've all had that great picture, until you get to get a closer look at it and little things ruin it

Took this today right before the owner drove off with the car. After I took the picture, I was pumped! It was going to be an awesome picture with the 3 suns, and the reflection of the antenna all in the same shot. Plus the deep black color. Man I was pumped about seeing it. Went into the garage and loaded them up into the computer only to be disappointed by a slight bit of dust and some funky colors going on around the picture. What is that blue dot anyway?

Oh well, never get that shot again

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself, it's still a great shot. Maybe you could play it off as more artistic this way.

If I had to guess, the blue dot and the larger whitish circle below it are due to the light catching something on the lens of your camera. I would inspect your camera for dust or smudges.

Yeah, I thought it was dust also. But it's not on any of the other shots. Maybe it's an orb. And the car is really haunted. Maybe this is the spirit of a former owner?

I suspect that may be the reflection of an alien craft trying to get a closer look at your work. Do you do saucers?

If you look at the relative distance between the small and large "suns", it look proporional to the distance of the artifacts. But, there is always the possibility of haunted space alien ghosts from another dimension... I think I'll just stick to the refraction of light thing.

            Hey Nick,

Those colored spots are called lens flare. They are sometimes caused by using a poor quality filter on the lens, or just plain happen due to the sheer size of the lenses front element and the angle to the sun. High end lenses use special coatings to try and eliminate lens flare, but it still happens on occasion. A slight change of angle or using a multi-resistant coated filter (I use B+W MRC filters) may help the problem.

            Still a cool shot though!

Yeah, flare (ghosting) has become a major problem for me.

That random green spot showed up on one of my shots:

Sometimes, a filter can help, but they can also make the flare worse.

In the end, some lenses are better than others for flare resistance. My 18-70mm Nikon lens was supposed to be very good at flare, but it showed up. So, I'm looking at getting a 24-70mm Nikon to try and eliminate the problem.

I did a full correction on a THRASHED black 350Z, and I did some 50/50 hood shots that in person were as good as I have ever seen....got home, and they were junk pictures. There were particles of dust that looked the ones on that hood you posted, and the pixelation was horrendous.

Needless to say, I was bummed...

What looks like dusting, could be the metal flake really popping!

                  It's an awesome shot.

I can photoshop it for you

Ughh, I hate that too. Same thing happened to me here. I even thought I had hologramming going on.

If you look at a lot of the after pictures taken with the car out in the sun for inspection you'll see a lot of lens flare in the pictures.

Keep your focus on the bigger picture, (no pun intended), that's the results of your hard work.
