  • Musty Book Smell!!

OK bit of an odd one here.

I bought a book off Ebay (Original Triumph Stag) which has suffered some minor water damage (I knew this before buying) and it has a bad musty smell.

Does anyone have any tips that can lessen the aroma?

Could I try Megs Odour Elliminator (misted onto a foam pad or cloth) or would that be too strong, maybe a mild water/bleach mix applied the same way?

    Heres hoping

That's mold you are smelling. There is only one cure--throw it out. Don't put it in with the rest of your library, as it was pass the mold on to your other books. Sorry.

Maybe set it out in the sun for a period of time over the summer when it's hot, bright and sunny outside?

I got a book off ebay that smelled really bad too, mine smelled like cigarettes. I tried bounce sheets between the pages, but that did nothing. Someone gave me a tip to try putting newspaper between the pages. I took some from the recycle bin and put one sheet between each page, then wrapped the book in newsprint and put it in a plastic bag for a week or two. Sure enough, 90% of the smell is now gone! I thought of trying the odor Eliminator as well, but haven't been able to find it up here.

Not sure how that will work on musty books, but worth a shot!

Thanks for all your suggestions, It cant hurt to give them a shot and if all else fails I can keep it away from other books and refer to if needed, I can label it an outcast!!
