  • Anyone know if I can paint ABS dash cover with bumper/trim paint?

Helping my step-son install a molded ABS dash cap and gauge bezel on his Dodge Ram and they didn't have the dark gray he needed for the dash cap. Dupli-color bumper trim dark gray is the perfect color, but it says it's for vinyl and rubber, not ABS. It's very thin and I'm worried about warping it and about adhesion/durability since we have to tape the cap down during installation the tape might pull off the new paint. We looked everywhere locally and online and couldn't find plastic paint in the correct color.
Anything is better than this mess, but I want to do it right and not screw up the new piece.

Any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated!

Eastwood may have what you need. You may need a coat of a adhesion of some kind to make the paint stick good.

I've read that some powder coating companies can powder coat plastics (the low temp powder coating that is ).

Vinyl paint should work. A very nice paint I used in my Roush is SEM Classic Coat paint. Very nice stuff, most OEM colors that I know of. I can't find their original site, and am to lazy to go get the can right now :p, but here's a website with some info. Second one down.

EDIT: went and got the can anyways. Bothered me not knowing exactly what I used. This is the stuff I used to paint my gauge pod. Pretty dang perfect match! http://semproducts.com/Catalog.asp?prod=242

Check with the Paint Mixer at any local PBE store and he should be able to direct you to the right products to prep the plastic and then paint it.

Thanks for taking the time to check your can and send me the info and link roushstage2 and nappers for the Eastwood tip and Mike Phillips for yours as well. I've already called local PBE/parts houses, FinishMaster and others and they didn't know about ABS specifically stating they only carry vinyl, rubber paint. Might have to take a drive there as the person answering the phone isn't always the one with the answers, it seems. About the only store we haven't checked is NAPA, so tomorrow...

The SEM product says it's for vinyl and that it's for flexible applications as a restorer? Guess it's similar to Duplicolor bumper/vinyl paint that I have? Eastwood also says vinyl AND plastic and that it's a dye, so Dupli-color bumper/trim/vinyl paint should work as well, I guess.

This ABS plastic piece seems very brittle and definitely needs adhesion promoter whatever coating is used. I'm trying to find some SEM in graphite gray locally, but it doesn't look good. I'm recommending to buy that or the Eastwood, but I think he's too much of a hurry to wait for it.

          I'll post the results FYI.

The SEM is a flexible coating because it can be used on leather too. I'm not sure what DupliColor product you are talking about as they have either a bumper paint or vinyl paint, not a 2-in-1?

I used the SEM to paint an ABS Autometer guage pod. Went on smooth and matched perfectly. DupliColor vinyl paint, IMO, don't seem to match as well but work nonetheless.

Sorry about that! It's Bumper Coating (Dupli-color). This is a perfect match when sprayed on a broken piece of the original dash. Don't know abou texture when applied on something with a shallower pattern like the dash cap. I've tried to find a piece of ABS to try this on to see if it will warp it and if it will stick to it, but no luck. Seems everything's made of vinyl, poly these days. I didn't think of the gauge pod, though when I was at Pep Boys yesterday.

This stuff sprays kind of like undercoating (only thinner) instead of a fine mist like paint which is a plus for a dash, I think? Shouldn't be too glossy.

Haven't used the bumper coating but years ago I used the Dupli-Color Vinyl paint and changed the brown interior of a 1974 Triumph Spitfire to black and was really impressed by how well it worked and how well it held up, even on the seats.

SEM makes quality products, if you can take the component to the PBE store, it would help the Paint Mixer to better understand what you're trying to do and if possible, make some recommendations. You could also contact SEM yourself and check with them, same for Dupli-Color, chances are they both have Tech Lines.

Re: Anyone know if I can paint ABS dash cover with bumper/trim paint?

Here's the end result. Used Dupli-color adhesion promotor and bumper paint. Also installed a gauge bezel cap. So much of the original dash was missing brackets had to be fabbed and material added to the dash cap to stabilize it at the windshield. More pieces broke and fell out than he had when I took these photos. Stuff was like peanut brittle.

Not bad for a first time deal!
