  • Painting my garage, couple questions..

I just moved into a new house with a 2 car garage .

But while getting a sun tan from the halogen lights light night i though to myself...more light! I bought a few daylight superbright bulbs, but with the dark partical board, once the sun goes down it gets dark fast.

What would be the cheapest and best looking way to paint partical board? Would i need to prime it first? Im not too worried about the "quality" because the garage will be redone down the road, so something cheap and effective at making the room look brighter!

I painted the OSB in my garage. I'm thinking that's what you mean. It has bigger flakes of wood to it, or do you mean the stuff made of saw dust glued together?

I just bought a gallon of Behr paint and went to town. You will still see the texture to it. I wouldn't worry about priming it, but it did take me a few coats to get good coverage.

How much do you need to cover?? I would always recommend to prime first..prime is usually cheaper..but if you can get a good deal on 5 gallons go for it. I would recommend using a 3/8" nap roller..best performance from a roller IMO. Get as bright a white as you can get..I wouldn't go with satin finish, I would atleast go with Semi-Gloss..It will reflect light nice..I'm not saying that satin won't...

Whatever can give me the brightest look. Id say the ceiling for sure and @ least 2 walls (Not much area). But a few coats if need be. Id says its 15x20x8

i just recently painted my two car garage and i have OSB and drywall in my garage. i bought two 5 gallon buckets of drywall primer and a 5 gallon bucket of exterior paint, semigloss white. the guy at lowes told me to go with exterior paint since the paint would be exposed to the cold, the heat, and the moisture. i put three coats of primer on and two coats of paint. I ended up using a bucket and a half of the primer.

Not sure on the amount of paint. I never get that right.

I went with Kitchen and Bath paint since it holds up the the water and moisture better. I can take photos if you want. One area is painted black and the other is gray.

kitchen and bath paint, that's a good idea. I never thought of that for the garage, and i used that for my kitchen and bathrooms

First off... Congratulations on the new garage! I was totally pumped when I got mine.

In this first one the OSB is the lower gray with white painted drywall above.

Here you can see the texture of the OSB a little better. I sort of like the look. It's like wood diamond plate. lol

You can get rid of the texture if you want but it's a huge pain.

Here are some homemade cabinets that are painted black.

BlueZero, I like the way you painted your garage, the two tone gray and black looks really good.

THanks Scott, thats really assuring, I was not expecting such good results. Off to Lowe's I go. I stopped @ Griots on the way home and spent 55, i need to slow down.

I am getting a little curious as to why you need to paint partical boards. Are you talking about partical boards being exposed in the interior? Are there vertical studs holding the partical boards? If so how about laying some dry walls over some insulation? Trust me, without them your garage will get very cold in the winter and unbearably hot in the summer. You can probably leave the dry walls unpainted, and still get a bright finish.

Well I failed big time on the paint, it was not the same wood all the way around the garage. Only one wall is, I wanted it wall white Invisible because when its dark outside and i have my lights(4+) all dark wood absorbs all the light. Soooo 90% of it is dry wall with a filmly paper that had no love but to sponge up what i had rolled on it. Help.

I'm pretty sure that if you got paint to cover OSB, it should do the same on drywall....but I've never seen dark colored drywall unless it has been painted or something.
