In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defense Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace. This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them your call sign, transponder code, type of aircraft, and points of origin and destination.

I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai. It's too good not to pass along.




The conversation went like this...

Iranian Air Defense Radar: "Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself."

Aircraft: "This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace."

Air Defense Radar: "You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!"

Aircraft: "This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter... Send em up, I'll wait!"

Air Defense Radar: (no response ... total silence)

Love the Marines! Work with a couple here at the Jail and they are great to have as our backup!!!

Funny that the Iranians think they could wipe Israel off the Earth.

Israel alone at 75% force could easily annihilate former-Persia. This conservative statistics is calculated by risk assessment agencies based on war games results.

An hour after you posted this, nappers, an iranian plane went down killing 168 people.

could it have been shot down by a FA-18??!?!?!?! probably not!

but what a coincidence that after u mentioned aviation and iran, something ugly happens to some iranian plane...

Awesome!! Anytime something about a plane is posted you know Im lurking! Love that F-18! One of the most awesome planes, gotten to see a few at air shows and let me tell you they can do some amazing things! I can just imagine the thoughts of the iranian guys when they found out it was an F-18 :rotfl:

That's creepy! I swear I got that in an email earlier this morning and didn't see the story!

I do feel bad for the families. Not everyone in Iran are terrorists or nuts. Every country has them!

Thats funny, the one in the picture looks to have HARM missles which are for anti-radar use. I live in the flight path for NAS Oceana and I hate the Hornets. There cool the first few times they fly over your house, but everyday after that they get old!

Sorry Naps, but it reads like a phony email forward. Really doubting the Iranian instinct would be to communicate (in perfect) English.

Kind of like one of those... "beware of a rapist who asks you to help him with his groceries than shoves you in the backseat of his car" type emails.

Its a couple blocks from the beach and I can ride my bike to my base down the road and those outweigh the noise.

You would be surprised how well people can speak in english. I've met several Iraqis who spoke fluent english, one even spoke english with a southern draw! Some could even speak german, italian, and russian pretty good so it wouldn't suprise me if that english would be the first thing they say over the radio, especially on the boarder of Iraq and Iran.
