Re: My Cadillac didn't pass the smog.

Yes is is ethanol fuel. They can be ran in a regular gas car yes but will need slight modification. But that is an entirely different thing there. Case is with emissions you want a clean burning full combustion. Normally when you fail your emissions test your car is essentially not burning all the fuel injected and that unburnt fuel your smog. To lower this, (in this case temporarily for testing) you want to either lower the amount of fuel injected or lower the amount of energy the fuel has.

This is where e85 comes into play. First is is a very clean burning fuel leaving behind very few emissions. Also e85 has 30% less energy than petrol. By adding e85 to you car you are in a sense diluting the amount of energy the gas has and thus allows for complete combustion of fuel and lowering of emission.

Now I dont want to really get into the tuning aspect of this and talk about stoichiometric ratio's but it does work. Read up on lean combustion and its effect with ultra low emissions.

If your going to do it use the gas to only a 1/4 tank left and dump in 3/4 gal of e85. Drive to the testing place, do the test and afterwards go to your nearest gas station and fill up to diluted that mix in your tank.

he said s.u.c.k. that word is censored on here, but not in the scenario he used it in

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

        I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
        Remove swirls my friends.

Here it is at the smog check: I'll be waxing it tomorrow.

Try the highest quality gases with Nitrogen enriched cleaners, High Mileage Oil, and give SeaFoam a try.

I think it's only Shell here that offers nitrogen enriched gas.

I think the Shell gas may help.

Very ironic, however. The issue on hand is caused by Nitrogen Oxide Emission, yet we're trying to use some Nitrogen injected fuel to reduce smog emission.

                  lol.
I'll just go with the Arco gas with the 93 gas grade and add the additives.

You know that the seller was the responsible party in getting the car smogged before they sell the car right?

Id stay away from any higher octane with any SoCal Smog shops. Also make sure that they let the car hit full operating temps before they begin the test and may want to make sure that the seller has not swapped out any of the catalytic converters.

Also there are plenty of places you can go where they will not charge you, or charge you half price if you do not pass smog.

Re: My Cadillac didn't pass the smog.

I have a "classic car" (26 years or older) and don't have to pass emissions. Good thing, otherwise I would probably fail miserably.

Sorry to hear it man, I have no advice to offer on this one.

Driving it around for 30 minutes would allow the car to run at full operating temps., right? I'll ask if he swapped out the catalytic converters.

30 minutes should be fine, but not if you disconnected the battery for any reasons since the drive cycle wont meet its target in that short of time / milage.

You should be able to look underneath the car and see them. Not sure how many cats there are with Cadillac's. If it is not the cats, it could be the EGR system not doing its job.

I have always told people a full tank of Mobil 93 and a bottle of

Run it all the way through, then fill up with 93 BP/Amoco, drive another day. Go test but be sure to get the engine good and hot.

                              Should pass then...

The "nitrogen enriched fuel" does nothing. High Mileage oil, or any motor oil for that matter, will not cause a car to fail an emissions test.

It is, unless you simply buy the car as is, then it's on you. Most people just buy it an never think about it. The dealers then charge you for it too. There are always ways around the whole smogging of the car when buying it private party though.
