The 01' Cavy doesn't have a distributor like older cars do. They have a coil pack on backside of the engine. You should be okay if you don't cover that up. I've cleaned my g/f's old 97' Cavy like that.

What kind of soap should I use on the engine? I noticed at car washes they have a way to clean your engine compartment. Does that work at all.

They don't use soap, they use degreasers.. You can also check out my engine detail a while back. http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11887(Complete with write-up).
