On Saturday, July 10th, Meguiar’s was proud to host members of the Southern California Rolls Royce club for a detailing clinic here at Meguiar’s Garage! Members brought a wide spectrum of cars showcasing the design and beauty famous to Rolls Royce.

After everyone arrived, we spent some time looking at the finish quality of different cars and discussing their car care maintenance program. The idea is to ascertain how their finish looks currently, and how they would like to have it look by choosing and using the correct Meguiar's products.

Here are some pictures of the owners and myself looking over the different cars and evaluating the surface conditions.

The question came up, "Should a black car be waxed?", apparently one Rolls Royce owner with a black Rolls Royce was told by a car salesman that black cars should not be waxes?

Meguiar's believes that any car exposed to the outdoors, and especially a daily driver, should have a protective coating of wax applied three to four times a year to maintain and preserve the finish. Not only does a quality car wax protect the finish, but it also adds richness, gloss and beauty, and in the case of a fine car like a Rolls Royce, a beautiful finish showcases the exquisite design of these landmark automobiles.

Below we are taking a temperature reading on the hood of a black Rolls Royce, at approximately 9:30am, the temperature on this car was in the 120 degree to 130 degree range. Around the temperature can rise as high 140 degrees and even higher.

After the classroom portion it was time to work on some cars, below is a Rolls Royce with a nitrocellulose lacquer finish that has become dull with oxidation and actually dirty with built up dirt, dust and staining to the finish.

Meguiar's always says,

Always use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

Because nitrocellulose lacquer is typically incredibly soft paint, and in this case it is also very old paint, caution must be used when choosing and applying any type of paint cleaner. As such, the first product we tried was the Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner (http://www.meguiars.com/store_meguiars/product_detail.cfm?sku=A-30), while this product did improve the finish, we decided to go one step further and try a product with a little more cleaning ability, the Clear Coat Body Scrub Paint Cleaner (http://www.meguiars.com/store_meguiars/product_detail.cfm?sku=A-10)

We applied the Clear Coat Body Scrub using a piece of terry cloth towel, the nap of a terry cloth towel, (the little cotton loops), act as a helper, when trying to remove oxidation and built up dirt in the paint. Although the name of this product implies it is formulated for use on clear coats paint, it can actually be used successfully on both clear coat and non-clear coat finishes.

This product worked perfectly. It removed the oxidation and years of dirt and dust imbedded into the paint and restored a vibrant blue color to the finish.

Mike,

I have both Body Scrub and MPPC. Would the MPPC have produced similar results? I often have a hard time choosing which one to use :confused:

The MPPC is more aggressive than the CCBS, because this paint was soft and old, we wanted to treat it very gently.

Also at the Rolls Royce clinic was this beautiful Rolls Royce Boattail. Interesting was the amount of leather used on the sides, (the red on the side of the car is read leather), while the cowl and the deck lid were uncoated aluminum,

Note how the rear of the car tapers to a sharp point much like the design of classic motorboat run-abouts.

This car had dual front side mounts, (spare tires), note how they also serve a dual purpose as a place to to latch review mirrors,

Just below the wing, or side window, you can see a vent opening that directed fresh air to the passengers legs. Also note the use of aluminum, leather and wood in the construction of this masterpiece!

Golly, that would have been a real treat to see all those old cars! I've been going up to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival in Auburn, Indiana, the past couple years. I just love looking at all the old cars. Real masterpieces!

I especially like that blue car that you used the Body Scrub on. It has that classic "old car" look :cool:

Another fine Rolls Royce Automobile at this event was this 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud.

While in the above pictures, it would appear as thought this car is immaculate in every dimension, and it is compared to 95% of the cars on the road, however, closer inspection of the finish reveals that a little tlc is needed to take it to it's maximum potential.

In the photos above, the finish has swirls. In this case the finish has two kinds of swirls,

* Cobweb-Effect These are the type of swirls that build up over time by normal, everyday wear and tear.

* Buffer Swirl These are they type of swirls that are usually instilled by the incorrect use of a rotary buffer, (bad technique), or a number of rotary buffer related problems such as wrong buffing pad, or wrong finishing polish, chosen for the final buff and in some cases all the above.

Before this event, the owner has generously offered to bring his Rolls Royce back to Meguiar’s for Showcar Makeover. The purpose of the makeover will be to remove the swirls and restore a show car finish to this rolling piece of artwork. The Rolls Royce detailing clinic was a huge success with over 20 cars spanning very early models to modern late model examples and 36 people attending a majority of which were from San Diego. Meguiar’s classroom was full to capacity and the Training Garage was standing room only!

This particular event was scheduled in time to help the owners learn more about detailing and preparing their car for display, in time for the Rolls Royce International Centennial Celebration to be held in Monterey, CA August 17-21st.

Here's a white Rolls Royce driven all the say from Victorville, CA that didn't get a lot of attention because it was tucked around the corner of the parking lot here at Meguiar's. A very beautiful and stately car.

Generally at the Saturday detailing classes held here at Meguiar's there will be a variety of cars besides the designated club cars. Such was the case when this 1973 Maserati Bora pulled into the parking lot.

The car has been repainted in the past and we showed the owner how a one-step product like ColorX could quickly and easily restore the clarity and gloss to his clear coat silver finish.

Our attention was turned to the inside of the car where the original leather seats were still intact and in good condition, all they need is a thorough cleaning and conditioning to restore them and preserve their value. This is an excellent example of when to use a 2-Step approach, using a dedicated leather cleaner and a dedicated leather conditioner.

While hard to tell in this picture, the four ribs just to the right of the bottle of Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Cleaner were cleaned and conditioned and besides looking better, the leather is now dramatically softer and more supple.

We tested this 2-step approach to the arm rest also and could tell right away that these two product and a Saturday afternoon would result in a restored leather interior for the Maserati Bora.

Hi Bill,

Sorry I never caught-up with this question, the thing about paint hardness or softness is you really don't know until you go out into your garage and work on your car and that's when you'll find out.

Recently we worked on a Chrysler 300 owned by forum member fatchance and we did some wet-sanding and polishing work on the hood of his car and the paint was very easy to work on, as in our sanding marks buffed out easily and quickly.

We removed the egg impact scratches from fatchance's Chrysler 300 here,

John aka fatchance, let us do a little wet-sanding on his Chrysler 300 as the hood was hit with an egg and it left some deeper scratches on the hood.

This photo was actually taken after wet-sanding with a backing pad and then using a rotary buffer with a cutting pad and M84 Compound Power Cleaner to remove the sanding marks. We didn't get any pictures of how bad the scratches were before we started but you'll get the idea...

After removing all the lighter scratches from the process above, we then cut up some small pieces of Nikken #2500 grit Finishing Paper to zero in on just the scratches while sanding.

After sanding each of the individual scratches flat, we then removed the sanding marks using the W-7006 Foam Cutting pad with some more M84 Compound Power Cleaner at around 1500 rpm.

We then re-polished the area with a W-8006 Foam Polishing Pad and some M83 Dual Action Cleaner/Polish with the rotary buffer, the re-polished again using M80 Speed Glaze with the G100 and then applied some M21 Synthetic Sealant.

About the only sign of the scratches left was this tiny little residual scratch right here...

Then, last Wednesday we worked on the same model car only a year newer and found the factory paint to be very hard as compared to John's Chrysler,

There were however to very unsightly scratches in the shape of an arc, running from the back of the hood by the windshield all the way to the front of the hood on the passenger's side of the car.

Here's some close-ups of the scratches, while they don't look very deep, they stood out like a sore thumb on an other wise flawless finish.

The paint also had these almost perfect, circular indents throughout the hood as you can see in the below close-up which is actually a section cropped out of the above photo and actual size.

In order to remove these scratches we decided to use a technique called Feather Sanding, where you take a small piece of Meguiar's Nikken Finishing Paper, about the size of a postage stamp, and carefully sand directly over the defect you're trying to remove and feather the edge out until you can no longer see the scratch.

After sanding out the two long arc scratches, we took a photo of the entire hood so you can now see just how long these scratches extended over the passenger's side of the hood and we think most people would agree, that if they owned this car and the finish was otherwise flawless except for two distinct, long scratches in the hood... well you would want them out of the paint also!

The easy part is actually sanding out the scratches, the tricky part is removing the sanding marks!. This however is where Meguiar's excels! We've been creating products that use diminishing abrasives since 1901 and our product have the ability to actually remove defects without instilling defects at the same time and that's the secret to creating flawless, show car finishes!

We would like to note that we think Ella's eyes got a little bigger while watching us sand on the hood of her baby...




After wet-sanding out the defects, we carefully massaged out our sanding marks and then asked Ella to apply some M21 Synthetic Sealant. Here are the results...

In summary...

Paint Hardness - You don't how hard or soft the paint on your car is until you go out into your garage and work on your car.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread....I had forgotten about it.

There used to be a Rolls parked at a pawn shop near here. It stayed there for a long time, but now it's gone.

I should have inquired about it just for heck of it. :D
