Thanks for the links Akimel.I've got them all on DVD! They're all excellent, although the french connection is really more of a train chase....Ha-ha!

I think Bullit will be the clear winner here.

Point of interest. If you look carefully at Dodge charger hitting the gas station, you can see it travelling in the background while the station explodes. Also it was pulled on a wire.

How many green VW beetles were in SF?????

Love your classic choices. If I had to pick some modern chase scenes, I would select Rhona Mitra's turn in a Bentley in "Doomsday", Bruce Willis as officer John McClain chasing after the baddies driving a big rig in "Live Free and Die Harder", and Mel Gibson's Mad Max driving the tanker in the final scene of the classic "Road Warrior".

One more add: Ben Affleck driving that convertible during the Japanese attack in "Pearl Harbor" Not for the chase scene so much, but just pure admiration for how a ragtop could get strafed by Japanese fighters and not lose an RPM in the process...

They just don't build em like that anymore...:D

Thanks Akimel,i've not seen that one. That's normal driving in Italy!!! without the Fuzz of course.

Good one aswell.I hope bullit wins here,though.....I've taken into consideration when it was made, plus the choice of vehicles that were used. The music by Lalo Schifrin( 'Shifting Gears') is also the best bit of music i've heard for an intro to a car chase.

If I put all these factors together,it's Bullit for me!!!!!

It's not on the list, but what about the chase in the original 1974 "Gone in 60 Seconds?" It's all in the link below, but lasts about an hour.

Hi Akimel,You certainly know where to dig up these car chases from.

"Hey whos behind us.....Oh no,it's a couple of Chevy's"

One thing that interests me with that one,Is that William Petersen behind the wheel. The cop in 'Manhunter'....One of the best movies!

See if you can dig out 'Dirty Mary,Crazy Larry' I havn't seen that one in years.(I think was a yellow Hemi,if I remember well).

Another interesting point: The guy driving the charger, was actually the 'stunt driver' for the movie(can't remember his name). He did a lot of others to,including the French Connection,in which he also starred.

Could you be thinking of Bill Hickman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hickman)?

I read a full article from a car magazine about ten years ago, regarding the Bullit chase scene.I can't remember every detail,so I pulled this from the web:
As director Peter Yates prepared to begin filming the chase scenes, there were four drivers, McQueen, Bud Elkins, Bill Hickman, and in a few scenes, Carey Loftin. Loren Janes tells up, "Carey Loftin was easily the best car man in the business. He brought in Bill Hickman to play a part and drive the other car."

Yes,BH. Another thing was that the cars were all spot welded and reinforced. So I wouldn't try it!

I'm a bit surprised,no one has chosen 'The Driver'.Okay, the actual film storyline wasn't as good, but the car scenes were really well filmed. The camera shots from the bumper views were excellent.
"Well done for trashing that horrible bright orange Merc!" Nice color, wrong car.

I like any chase scene that involves a Chevrolet Caprice police car.

I can't remember the name of the movie, but John Mahony (Frasier's Dad Monty Crane - from the sitcom Frasier) was driving a Caprice and I was impressed with the chase scene. I owned 2 retired Caprice police vehicles. Those cars can take such a beating. I love watching them get air. :chuckle1

You need to see the original Gone In 60 Seconds from 1974.

IMO it blows away the Nick Cage crapfest version. This coming from a Nick Cage fan.

The remake had such potential for a really great car movie. Then they throw in the side story of the mobster trying to kill his brother and the other gang competing for the cars etc... Why not just keep it simple, a gang of car theves running around with cool cars. The Jaguar XJ2200 got less than 5 seconds of air time!!!
