Thursday Night Open Garages are conducted after 5:00PM but our formal Saturday Detailing 101 classes start at 8:30AM sharp!

As for this particular class, it was great once again, thanks to all those who came out to spend some time with us on a Saturday morning!

And speaking of pictures..... here they are!

Ron was kind enough to let us use his 2009 Cadillac CTS as a demo car this time around. No pressure, huh? Oh, and this is a before shot - looks pretty darn good, doesn't it?

Look closer and you'll find a bunch of swirls and what Ron described as "seagull scratches". Seems one day a group of gulls used the hood of his car as a landing ramp!

So we got to work on the hood of the CTS, starting with claying. Well, we went through the motions of claying anyway, just for the benefit of those who have never clayed before (and there were just a couple of people who fit that group). Oh, and by "went through the motions of claying" we mean just that - Ron's CTS was glass smooth so there wasn't anything for the clay to pick up.

Of course, whether you're actually removing anything with clay or not, the motions are still the same, and we wanted those who hadn't used clay before to get a feel for it.

Next we taped off the hood so we could demonstrate hand application of Ultimate Compound on one side and application via G110v2 on the other.
Hand application requires a bit of steady pressure and working a small area with tight, overlapping strokes.

Wipe off a paint cleaner or pure polish immediately - don't let them dry.

This is NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 after hand application. Yes, it's there - but it's a thin coat. And when dry, a thin coat wipes off with almost no effort.

Using the G110v2 is actually pretty straight forward. Here Ultimate Compound is applied to a W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 Polishing Pad, ready to attack swirls and sea gull landing marks.

The leading edge of the hood on this CTS dips down to a short piece above the grille. Using a G110v2 in an area like this might seem tricky at first, but it's really not. Just roll the tool over the edge to follow the body contours, sharp though they may be on the CTS. With the G110v2 you don't need to worry about burning through the paint here.

The strip down the center was covered in tape so it was untouched by our efforts and is still loaded with swirls. On the left is the hand applied area, on the right the G110v2 side. Even though we didn't spend a lot of time on either side, the improvement is dramatic.

The top portion is "before" and show swirls and even the straight line scratches created by the sea gulls. The lower portion is almost completely swirl free and the scratches simply stop at the tape line. Again, this was a single, relatively quick pass with Ultimate Compound on a G110v2.

Following the demo we let anyone who wanted to jump in with the G110v2 and get a feel for the tool.

A big thanks to Thai for handling the camera work for us this time around, and to Ron for letting us use his CTS as our demo car.
