Meguiar's Car Care 201
Saturday March 26, 2011
Even with threatening weather we ended up with a great class over the weekend - lots of interest, lots of questions, and just a good time all around.
As always, we started out with some classroom instruction going over theory, and then we headed out to the garage for a full demo and then hands on time for everyone.
Our sanding was all done with a pneumatic D/A sander using our Unigrit Sanding & Finishing Discs. On the right is a 1500 grit disc, on the left 3000 grit.

We did our initial damp sanding with 1500 grit and then refined the sanding marks with 3000 grit.

Keeping things clean is critical when sanding, and a quick blast against a microfiber towel will help to clean out the build up.

Here you can see the difference in gloss levels between the 1500 grit (left) and refined 3000 grit (right) sanding marks.

Once the sanding is done, it's time to compound out the sanding marks and start working toward a proper, glossy finish. Here we're using a spur to clean a W4000 wool pad prior to use.

With the pad clean, we lay a bead of M105 onto the surface and prepare to pick it up. With the pad slightly angled up we move it quickly and smoothly over the bead, picking it up at the 10 o'clock/2 o'clock area of the pad.

Our initial pass with the wool pad has removed the majority of sanding marks, but not everything, so we gave it another pass to finish things off.

Here we're getting ready to pick up a bead of M205 with a W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 foam polishing pad. We chose this pad for this particular paint - in many cases the W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 foam finishing pad will do the trick. Either way, you still want to pick up that bead of product across the 10/2 area of the pad.

In the upper area of this shot you can still see the sanding marks from the area we haven't yet compounded, but the lower section looks beautiful.

After the demo it was time for our students to cut loose and have a go at both sanding and rotary buffing.
