Our first class of 2014 and it was a resounding success!

Our demo car for the day, following classroom instruction, was a 2006 Audi S4 Avant with over 80,000 miles on the clock. Plenty of swirls, etchings and water spots all over the hood (and everywhere else, for that matter). We can't fault Gary, the owner, however as he's only owned the car for a couple of months. Kudos to him for wanting to learn how to bring the finish to the level deserving of this hot little wagon.

After cleaning the surface of light contaminants with D115, we clayed the hood.

Our demo area then consisted of two sections on the hood. On the right we used traditional foam pads with the Ultimate Trio (Compound, Polish, Wax)

On the right side we used the DA Microfiber Correction System. Here we're priming the DMC5 cutting pad prior to first use.

Fullly primed, blown out, and three pea sized drops of product. Let's polish some paint!

It's pretty obvious that we obliterated the swirls and other defects with the DAMF System, but what this image can't show is how much faster that process did the trick than more traditional foam pads did. We needed a couple of passes with foam, but a single long pass with the DAMF System did the trick. Plus, even though the foam did a great job removing all the obvious defects, the DAMF also gave us more clarity overall. Keep in mind that Audi paint can lean toward the hard side of things, and this certainly did even though it wasn't crazy hard by any means. Had this car not been so badly neglected for its whole life, the foam and Ultimate Compound may well have been all that was needed. But it's situations like this that are the reason for such a wide range products being available to you, the detailer; paint systems are not all created equal and you need to choose the product and process and best achieves your goals for your car.

OK, back in the garage and time to get the entire hood buffed out.

We're all about hands on training here!

And we'll use both hands if necessary! Here's a helpful tip: if your instructor puts his hands on the buffer to steer you through a proper buffing section motion, don't fight him!!!

Dueling buffers. Dueling processes.

Thanks to everyone who came out on such a beautiful Saturday, and especially to Gary for letting a bunch of strangers buff on his Audi!
