View Full Version : Rotary buffer vs Right angle drill

What's the difference functionally, between a rotary buffer versus a right angle drill? -- besides the handle(s)?

I've seen some 18-24v cordless right angle drills that'll handle 700lbs of force and are a lot more convenient than a plugin rotary buffer. So I'm trying to understand the benefit of the rotary buffer.

Other than the very poor ergonomics of taking a tool that’s designed and optimized exclusively to be pushed forward and trying to use it to for a primarily lateral (and rather precise and delicate) operation there’s the one deficiency of all cordless tools, power.

The Makita 9227 rotary polisher is very popular with detailers. It’s rated at 120V, 10A. That’s 1200 watts of power.

As an example, Milwaukee’s very capable 18V cordless tools are powered by batteries rated at 2.4Ah. That’s a total energy of 43.2Wh. If it were even possible to deliver 1200W into a tool with one of these batteries it would be completely expended in 2 minutes and 10 seconds. You wouldn’t get very far buffing a car.

He's right, the cordless units are cute but they can't do the job. Good enough for apply and removing wax though.
