  • National Motorcar Museum of France

    Hi,
I first decided to try Meguiar's produts after visiting the National Motorcar Museum of France (also known as the Schlumpf Collection), arguably the finest auto museum in the world. The museum has about 400 outstanding automobiles on display, from the first Benz motor wagon to last week's grand prix winner. Modest little signs here and there noted that the Museum used Meguiar's products on its priceless collection of cars. The museum is in the city of Mulhouse in the Alsace region of France. If you are visiting eastern France or nearby Germany and care even a little bit about cars, this is a side-trip to nirvana. Even my wife was impressed The Schlumpf brothers were obsessive collectors, especially of Bugattis, which were made in nearby Molsheim. The collection includes dozens of Bugattis with two of the seven huge Bugatti Royales ever built. When the brothers textile mills were shut down by a big strike, and they were facing tax problems, they fled the country, and after some distruction, the government took over the collection. The cars are superbly displayed along brick-paved "streets" lined with ornate street lamps. Admission includes a handlheld audio device with commentary on each exhibit in a choice of languages. For me, some of the highlights were the rows of Bugattis from the first tiny voiturettes to the great racing cars and swoopy pre-WWII sports cars, pre-war and postwar racing Mercedes-Benz (sports car and grand prix versions), Maseratis, Ferraris and Alfa Romeos, magnificent Hispano Suizas and other grand cars from about 1880 to the mid-1960s. The emphasis is on European, especially French and German makers, and there is an exhibit area where a make is featured on a rotating basis. When we were there, the featured maker was Skoda, the Czech company. Visiting the museum can take the better part of a day, but you won't regret it. And you can sure of finding terrific food and wine in the area.
