  • can these swirls be taken out with a PC?(pic inside)

i have a car, a 1993 civic(blue with CC, original paint), that has HORRIBLE swirls on the hood and roof. There are moderate swirls on the rest of the body which im sure the PC can take care of.

However, these swirls on the hood have me doubting what a PC can really do for this car. Heres a picture to help you guys better understand what im dealing with. It was taken in broad daylight, the sun is directly overhead. It kind of hurts urs eyes to see this

Do you think these can be tackled with #83 with a polishing pad/cutting pad??? Or is a rotary required?

    thanks guys!

I think #80 on a polishing pad could take care of those swirls, Honda's have pretty soft paint so swirl removal isn't too bad. But it is worse then i think then you may need #83 on a polishing pad. (Meguair's does not recommend using a cutting pad on the PC)

yes that picture is a pretty accurate depiction of the swirls. This is the only shot that actually shows how bad it is. Yay for 90 degree sun

PS: i tried scratch x on it, (3 well worked in applications), and it did nothing!

PPS: i dont have a PC yet, planning on buying one. Im just trying to justify the reason for buying one now

You should be able to get out the majority of swirls and scratches using a PC and the right technique.

3 applications of well worked in ScratchX? that should pretty much remove any swirls

well i lied before, i ddint apply the scratch x onto the hood (didnt want to only get like 1/4 of it done, knowing how long it would take) I applied it to the skinny peices above the doors. I only saw a very minor visivle improvement in swirls. However, the swirls are the area above the doors arent nearly as bad as the hood.

Careful there with broad statements like the above, there really is no way of knowing how hard or how soft the paint on any particular car is going to be until you actually go to work on it.

Last night at our Meguiar's Open Garage, two young men brought in the RSX with horrific swirls and scratches and the clear coat paint on this Honda was hard as glass.

They used M83 with a W-8006 polishing pad on the G100 and removed about 90% of the swirls and scratches but many Random, Isolated Deeper Scratches, (RIDS), still remained and I watched these two guys work the M83 very, very thoroughly against the finish.

You'll never see me make blanket statements about hard or soft paint, I always couch my words because in all honesty, you just don't know what you have to work with until you start to work with it.

The RSX Mike Phillips mentions really had nasty swirls in it, and the guys working on it did not have a ton of experience, but they had excellent guidance and were really getting their technique down. And that, I think, is the key.

The first time I used a PC all I did was push product around because my technique, as it turned out, was sorely lacking. Mike Phillips set me straight and I practiced some more, ultimately getting the result you see below on my '99 Miata using M80 with a W-8006. If I can do this, anybody can!
