  • When in doubt...MASK it!

Yesterday I was using the G-100 on my car ('65 Mustang w/ SS paint) with the DC Paint Cleaner and the W9006 pad, and guess what? I got too close to an edge and burned through the paint. I knew before hand that my car has VERY thin paint but I was surprised that it happened with this combo...

lessson to be learned....when in doubt, mask it!

No offense intended so please don't take this the wrong way. It looks like that repaint has some issues below that line and along the leading edge of the door anyway. Is that new paint?

No offense taken friend...this car has a s.... paint job, heck the only thing holding it together is the wax!

Still, the reason I posted this is because You never know what lies beneath

I don't think it actually "burned" the paint in this case. With a 6.5" pad a DA doesn't cause enough friction, thus not enough heat, to burn paint. As we all know, in order to remove swirls you need to remove an extremely thin layer of paint to level those swirls, scratches, etc and this the DA does quite nicely. I think in this case, and by the original poster's own admission, the repaint is not a quality piece of work and the paint is exceptionally thin. It may even be thinner on such a sharp body crease. All of this points to a disaster waiting to happen, and happen it did. Heck, I'd be willing to bet that some aggressive hand polishing could have resulted in the same outcome, at least in this case. With a factory paint job, or a good respray, you should have trepidation about passing over body lines with the DA.

I sure hope you meant to say you shouldn't have trepidation.

n't as in shouldn't, should NOT. ie, no need to worry about it

Ha, my fingers can't always keep up with my brain so sometimes I drop a letter or two. Or an apostrophe. Yeah, in this case it really changed the intent of my post, sorry about that. Thanks for pointing it out Lydia.

Ouch! SS paint is really soft and I noticed on my old car that the SS paint was wearing thin at the bottom. I was only using Cleaner/Wax on it, as time wore on, I slowly started wearing the paint in some areas thin.

                        Single Stage Paint.

This paint does not have a seperate clear coat over the base paint.
